Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Awliyaa (أَوْلِيَاءَ): Protectors, allies, or guardians. In this context, it refers to false deities, idols, or any beings that the polytheists took as their supporters and intercessors besides Allah.
  • Al-Waliyy (الْوَلِيُّ): The True Guardian, Protector, and Supporter — the One who manages the affairs of His creation, guides His believing servants, and is solely worthy of worship and allegiance.
  • Yuhyee al-mawtaa (يُحْيِي الْمَوْتَىٰ): He gives life to the dead — a reference to the resurrection on the Day of Judgment, when Allah will bring the dead out of their graves for reckoning.
  • Qadeer (قَدِيرٌ): All-Powerful, Capable of everything — nothing is beyond His might or escapes His will.

Explanation of the Verse:

After the previous verse established that Allah alone is the Creator and that all other so-called deities are false, this verse addresses the polytheists’ misguided choice. The rhetorical question "أَمِ اتَّخَذُوا" ("Or have they taken...") is a rebuke — it means: "Have these people really taken, besides Allah, protectors and allies whom they worship, rely upon, and call upon in times of need?" The verse dismisses this choice as utterly baseless, because the truth is that Allah alone is the True Guardian and Protector. He is the One who takes care of His believing servants, guiding them out of darkness into light, answering their prayers, and supporting them in all their affairs. Any other "protector" they have chosen is powerless — it can neither benefit nor harm, neither give nor withhold.

The verse then presents two overwhelming proofs of Allah’s exclusive right to this role. First, He gives life to the dead — He alone has the power to resurrect every human being from their graves on the Day of Judgment, a power that no idol, no prophet, and no created being can ever possess. Second, He is All-Powerful over everything — His capability is absolute and unrestricted; nothing in the heavens or the earth can escape His will, and no matter how great or small, everything is under His complete control. These two attributes — giving life and having absolute power — are the very essence of true guardianship, and they belong exclusively to Allah.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, reflect on this profound truth: the One who created you, who sustains you every moment, who will resurrect you after death — He is the only One worthy of your trust and devotion. Why turn to helpless creations that cannot even protect themselves? When you place your reliance on Allah alone, you are connected to the Most Powerful, the Most Merciful, the Ever-Living. He never abandons His servants, never fails to answer those who call upon Him sincerely, and never leaves His believing slaves without support. This is the beauty of Islam: it frees you from the chains of fear and dependence on anything other than Allah. So turn to Him, make Him your only Guardian, and you will find peace that no worldly protector can ever provide. Indeed, He is the One who gives life, and He is the One who will bring you back to life — so prepare for that meeting with faith and righteous deeds, for His power knows no limits, and His mercy encompasses all things.

📜 Verse 7-11 — Ash-Shura

And thus We have revealed to you an Arabic Qur'an that you may warn the Mother of Cities [Makkah] and those around it and warn of the Day of Assembly, about which there is no doubt. A party will be in Paradise and a party in the Blaze.
And if Allah willed, He could have made them [of] one religion, but He admits whom He wills into His mercy. And the wrongdoers have not any protector or helper.
Or have they taken protectors [or allies] besides him? But Allah - He is the Protector, and He gives life to the dead, and He is over all things competent.
And in anything over which you disagree - its ruling is [to be referred] to Allah. [Say], "That is Allah, my Lord; upon Him I have relied, and to Him I turn back."
[He is] Creator of the heavens and the earth. He has made for you from yourselves, mates, and among the cattle, mates; He multiplies you thereby. There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
