Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Al-Bayyinat (الْبَيِّنَاتِ): Clear, evident miracles and proofs that demonstrate the truth of a messenger’s call.
  • Al-Hikmah (الْحِكْمَةِ): Wisdom; here it refers to prophethood, sound judgment, and the profound teachings of the divine revelation.
  • Tattaqullāh (اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ): Have consciousness of Allah, fulfill His commands, and abstain from what He has forbidden.
  • Aṭī‘ūn (أَطِيعُون): Obey me in what I convey from Allah.

Explanation of the Verse:

When Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) came to the Children of Israel with unmistakable miracles—such as healing the blind and the leper, and bringing the dead to life by Allah’s permission—he addressed them with clarity and sincerity. He said: *"I have come to you with wisdom"*—meaning the divine knowledge, prophethood, and the guidance of the Gospel—*"and to make clear to you some of that over which you differ."*

This refers to the matters of religion and law in which the Jewish scholars and communities had disputed and fallen into confusion. Jesus came not to burden them, but to illuminate the truth, resolve their disagreements, and guide them back to the straight path of Allah.

He then called them to the essence of all prophetic messages: *"So fear Allah and obey me."* This is a call to sincere devotion—to be mindful of Allah in every action, to worship Him alone, and to follow the messenger who speaks nothing but the truth from Him.

A Da‘wah Reflection:

This verse beautifully demonstrates the mercy and wisdom of Allah in sending messengers. Jesus (peace be upon him) did not come to condemn or complicate, but to clarify and unite. His message was simple yet profound: turn to Allah with sincere hearts, and follow the guidance that leads to success in this life and the Hereafter.

For us today, this is a timeless reminder that the path to peace and salvation lies in taqwa (God-consciousness) and obedience to the messengers of Allah. The final messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him), brought the complete and perfect guidance—the Qur’an—which resolves all differences and leads humanity to the light. Let us embrace this guidance with open hearts, for it is the key to true happiness and eternal success. And let us remember that every prophet, from Adam to Muhammad, called to the same truth: worship Allah alone and follow His messengers.

But the denominations from among them differed [and separated], so woe to those who have wronged from the punishment of a painful Day.
