The Interpretation:
In this magnificent night — the blessed Night of Decree, which falls within the holy month of Ramadan — Allah, the Lord of all worlds, decrees and settles every matter with perfect wisdom. From the Preserved Tablet (al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ), the angels record and carry out all that will occur throughout the coming year: every life that will begin, every soul that will depart, every provision that will be granted, every trial and triumph, every good and every hardship. Nothing is left to chance, and nothing escapes His knowledge.
This is not a random or arbitrary decree — it is an *amr ḥakīm*, a matter that is firmly established, deeply wise, and utterly precise. Every detail has a purpose, every event carries meaning, and everything unfolds according to the infinite wisdom of the All-Knowing, All-Wise. What has been written cannot be changed, and what has been destined cannot be altered, for it flows from the knowledge and mercy of the One who knows what was, what is, and what will be.
This divine decree is a profound source of comfort for the believer. When you know that every matter — your provision, your lifespan, your successes, and your challenges — has already been settled by the Most Merciful, your heart finds rest. You realise that no one can withhold what Allah has written for you, and no one can give what He has not decreed. This knowledge frees you from anxiety about the future and from envy of what others possess, for everything is in His hands alone.
The wisdom of this decree also calls you to reflect: if Allah has taken the care to detail every affair of your life with perfect precision, how much more should you turn to Him in trust and gratitude? He has not left you wandering aimlessly; He has charted your course with mercy and purpose. Your role is to strive, to pray, and to submit — knowing that the outcome is already in the hands of the Best of Planners.
So, dear believer, let this verse fill your heart with tranquillity. The same night that brings the Qur’an down as a guide for humanity also brings the decree of all affairs. This is the night of divine mercy, the night of decisive wisdom, and the night when your Lord — the Hearer of every voice, the Knower of every secret — writes for you what is best. Seek it, cherish it, and stand in prayer during it, for it is a gift beyond measure from the Lord of all that exists.
