Surah Ad-Dukhan — Verse 42

Word Meanings:

• إِلَّا مَن رَّحِمَ اللَّهُ — "Except those upon whom Allah has mercy": meaning, except the believers whom Allah has chosen for His mercy and forgiveness.
• الْعَزِيزُ — The Almighty, the All-Powerful, the One whose will none can overcome or resist.
• الرَّحِيمُ — The Most Merciful, the One whose mercy encompasses His righteous servants.

Tafsir (Explanation):

On that Day — the Day of Judgment — no soul will be able to benefit another in any way. Neither family ties, nor friendship, nor wealth, nor status will avail anyone. No one will be able to defend another, and no one will be able to come to the aid of a companion. Every person will be utterly preoccupied with their own fate, as the Qur'an describes elsewhere: "On that Day a man will flee from his brother, and from his mother and his father, and from his wife and his children — for every man, on that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others" (80:34–37).

However, there is one exception: those upon whom Allah has bestowed His mercy — the sincere believers. For them, Allah will grant permission for intercession to take place. The believers will intercede for one another by Allah's leave, and the righteous will benefit from the good deeds they sent forth in this world. This is a manifestation of Allah's boundless mercy toward His faithful servants.

Then Allah concludes the verse with two of His most beautiful names: Al-Aziz (The Almighty) and Ar-Rahim (The Most Merciful). He is Al-Aziz in His vengeance against His enemies — none can escape His punishment, and none can thwart His will. And He is Ar-Rahim toward His allies and those who obey Him — His mercy reaches them in this world and the next, and His compassion knows no bounds.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, contemplate this profound truth: on the Day when all human connections fail, when every support system collapses, and when even the closest relatives abandon one another — the only thing that will save you is the mercy of Allah. That mercy is not random; it is earned through faith, sincere repentance, and righteous deeds in this life. Allah says: "Indeed, My mercy encompasses all things, and I will decree it for those who fear Me and give zakah and those who believe in Our verses" (7:156).

So hasten to that mercy today. Turn to your Lord in repentance before that Day arrives — the Day when neither wealth nor children will benefit anyone, "except one who comes to Allah with a sound heart" (26:88–89). Allah is Al-Aziz — He has power over all things — and He is Ar-Rahim — He loves to forgive and show compassion. Do not despair of His mercy, for He says: "Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful" (39:53).

Let this verse be a source of hope and motivation. The door of mercy is open — will you enter through it?
