Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Kafaroo (كَفَرُوا): Those who disbelieved, rejected the Oneness of Allah, and denied His messengers and commandments.
- Yaftadoo (يَفْتَدُوا): To ransom or redeem themselves — to offer something in exchange for their freedom from punishment.
- Tuqubbila (تُقُبِّلَ): Accepted (from them) — meaning, Allah would not accept this ransom.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah Almighty informs us of a profound and sobering truth: those who persist in disbelief — rejecting His Oneness, His messengers, and His divine law — will find themselves in a state of utter desperation on the Day of Judgment. At that moment, when they witness the reality of the punishment before them, they will wish with all their hearts that they could buy their freedom.
The verse tells us that even if every disbeliever possessed all the treasures of the earth — every mountain of gold, every ocean of pearls, every wealth that has ever existed — and then doubled it, adding an equal amount more, and offered all of it as a ransom to escape the torment of that Day, it would not be accepted from them. Not a single coin, not a single grain. The offer would be rejected entirely, because the time for deeds has passed, and the time for recompense has arrived.
And beyond this rejection, they face an even harsher reality: "And for them is a painful punishment." — a torment that is severe, agonizing, and everlasting.
This verse carries a powerful lesson for us in this life. It teaches us that the opportunity to "ransom" ourselves is now — not with wealth, but with faith, repentance, and righteous deeds. Today, Allah accepts our repentance and multiplies our good deeds. Today, a sincere heart, a tear of regret, a prayer offered in the darkness of the night — all of these are worth more than the entire world and everything in it. But tomorrow, on the Day of Judgment, no ransom will be accepted, no matter how vast.
So let this verse awaken us to the precious gift of *now*. Let us not be among those who wait until it is too late, wishing they could trade the world for a single moment of mercy. The door of forgiveness is open today — let us rush to it before it closes forever. And let us thank Allah, who in His infinite mercy, has given us the chance to secure our salvation through faith and good deeds, without needing to offer any ransom at all.
