Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, the Most High, reminds us in this verse of a profound historical truth: He took a solemn and binding covenant from the Children of Israel — a pledge to believe in Him alone, to worship Him sincerely, and to obey His messengers. This covenant was not hidden or obscure; it was made explicit through the Torah and the teachings of the prophets sent to them. Alongside this covenant, Allah sent them messenger after messenger, each carrying clear guidance to show them the straight path and to lead them out of darkness into light.
Yet, the tragedy unfolds in the very next scene: every time a messenger came to them with what contradicted their selfish desires and worldly whims — whether it was a command to abandon their transgressions, to purify their worship, or to submit to divine law — they responded with hostility and arrogance. They did not receive the messengers with open hearts or seeking truth. Instead, they divided their response into two shameful patterns: some messengers they outright denied and called liars, and others they went so far as to murder. This was not a one-time lapse; it was a repeated, habitual crime. The verse uses the present tense "yaqtulūn" (they kill) to paint a vivid picture of their ongoing, ingrained behavior — as if the killing of prophets had become a characteristic trait of their collective conduct.
This verse carries a powerful lesson for us all. It exposes the danger of allowing personal desires and whims to override divine revelation. When a person's heart is enslaved to its own inclinations, the truth becomes unbearable — not because the truth is flawed, but because the soul has become corrupted. The Children of Israel were given every opportunity: covenant, messengers, miracles, and clear signs. Yet their attachment to their own desires became a barrier between them and the guidance of Allah.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, let this verse be a mirror for your own soul. How do you respond when the truth challenges your comfort? When a command from Allah conflicts with your personal preference, do you submit with humility, or do you find excuses to turn away? The beauty of Islam is that it calls us to freedom — freedom from the tyranny of our own whims, and submission to the One who knows what is best for us. The messengers came with mercy, but those who rejected them only harmed themselves. Today, the final messenger, Muhammad ﷺ, has brought us the complete and preserved guidance. The covenant is renewed with every Muslim who testifies that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His messenger. Let us not repeat the error of those before us. Let us embrace the truth with open hearts, obey with sincerity, and honor the messengers by following the last of them, ﷺ. For in that obedience lies success in this life and the next — a success that those who came before us lost, despite all their advantages, simply because they chose their desires over divine guidance.
