Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- Insān (الإنسان): The human being, referring to every person individually.
- Saʿā (سعى): Strived, exerted effort, worked, or pursued — encompassing both deeds of the heart (intentions) and deeds of the body (actions).
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse establishes a fundamental principle of divine justice and personal accountability: every human being shall have nothing except what they themselves have strived for. Just as no soul bears the burden of another’s sin — and no one can carry another’s wrongdoing — likewise, no one can earn reward on behalf of another. The good deeds, acts of worship, charity, patience, and sincere efforts you put forth in this life are yours alone; their reward is recorded for you, and no one else can claim them or take their place. Conversely, if you neglect to strive, you cannot expect to benefit from the efforts of others as a substitute for your own responsibility.
This verse also teaches that the value of your deeds is tied to your own intention and action. If you do good with a sincere heart, you reap its fruits; if you do evil, you bear its consequences. No one can transfer their good deeds to you, nor can you transfer your bad deeds to them — except in the specific ways Allah has legislated, such as ongoing charity (ṣadaqah jāriyah) or righteous offspring who pray for you, which are themselves the fruits of your own striving in this world.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This divine statement is a powerful reminder that your life is a precious investment. Every moment you spend in obedience, every step you take toward goodness, every tear you shed in humility before your Lord — all of it is recorded and will be returned to you on the Day when neither wealth nor children will avail, except one who comes to Allah with a sound heart. So do not waste your days in negligence, thinking that someone else’s piety will save you. Strive for your own soul, race toward forgiveness from your Lord, and build a treasure of good deeds that will greet you on the Day of Judgment. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has opened the door of striving for every soul — so knock on it with sincerity, and you will find His reward beyond your imagination.
