Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Maghloob" (مَغْلُوبٌ): Overcome, defeated, or overpowered by the opposition.
  • "Fantasir" (فَانتَصِر): So grant me victory, or take revenge on my behalf.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, we witness one of the most profound moments of prophetic supplication. Prophet Nuh (Noah, peace be upon him) had spent nine hundred and fifty years calling his people to the worship of Allah alone, enduring ridicule, rejection, and relentless opposition. Despite his unwavering patience and wisdom, only a handful believed. When his people persisted in their arrogance and even threatened him, he turned to his Lord in complete humility and submission.

He said: *"Indeed, I am overcome, so grant me victory."* This was not a complaint or a sign of despair in Allah's mercy, but rather a declaration of his human limitation and a plea for divine intervention. He acknowledged that his own strength and efforts had reached their end, and that only Allah—the All-Powerful, the All-Wise—could bring about justice and relief. By saying "I am overcome," he was not admitting defeat in faith, but rather surrendering the outcome entirely to Allah, recognizing that victory comes only from Him.

This supplication reflects the beautiful balance in Islam: we strive with all our might, and then we place our complete trust in Allah, knowing that He is the Best of Planners. Nuh's words also teach us that turning to Allah in times of hardship is not a weakness—it is the greatest strength. When we feel overwhelmed by the trials of life, whether they come from people, circumstances, or our own souls, we should follow the example of this noble prophet and call upon our Lord with sincerity, saying: *"O Allah, I am overcome, so grant me victory."*

The response to this du'a was swift and magnificent: Allah commanded Nuh to build the ark, and soon after, the great flood came as a decisive punishment for the disbelievers and a triumphant salvation for the believers. This teaches us that Allah never abandons His sincere servants. When we turn to Him with a pure heart, He answers in ways we could never imagine, turning our trials into triumphs and our hardships into blessings.

Da'wah Message:

This verse is a timeless reminder for every believer: no matter how difficult your situation becomes, never lose hope in Allah's help. The door of du'a (supplication) is always open, and the One who hears every whisper is closer to you than your own jugular vein. Let the example of Nuh (peace be upon him) inspire you to remain steadfast in your faith, patient in your efforts, and constant in your prayers. For indeed, after every hardship comes ease, and with every sincere call to Allah, victory is near. Embrace this beautiful act of worship—du'a—and make it your weapon in times of ease and difficulty alike.

Racing ahead toward the Caller. The disbelievers will say, "This is a difficult Day."
9۞ كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ فَكَذَّبُوا عَبْدَنَا وَقَالُوا مَجْنُونٌ وَازْدُجِرَ
The people of Noah denied before them, and they denied Our servant and said, "A madman," and he was repelled.
10فَدَعَا رَبَّهُ أَنِّي مَغْلُوبٌ فَانتَصِرْ
So he invoked his Lord, "Indeed, I am overpowered, so help."
11فَفَتَحْنَا أَبْوَابَ السَّمَاءِ بِمَاءٍ مُّنْهَمِرٍ
Then We opened the gates of the heaven with rain pouring down
12وَفَجَّرْنَا الْأَرْضَ عُيُونًا فَالْتَقَى الْمَاءُ عَلَىٰ أَمْرٍ قَدْ قُدِرَ
And caused the earth to burst with springs, and the waters met for a matter already predestined.
