Word Meanings:

  • "Abwāb" (أَبْوَاب): Gates or doors.
  • "Al-Samā'" (السَّمَاء): The sky or heaven.
  • "Munhamir" (مُّنْهَمِر): Pouring forth in torrents, gushing abundantly and continuously, flowing with great force and intensity.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse describes Allah’s response to the supplication of Prophet Nūḥ (peace be upon him) when he called upon his Lord against his disbelieving people. Allah says: "So We opened the gates of the heaven with water pouring forth in abundance." This means that the sky was made to pour down an immense, relentless, and torrential rain — not a gentle drizzle, but a violent, overwhelming downpour that came without pause. It was a direct answer to Nūḥ’s prayer and a manifestation of divine power, as the heavens themselves were commanded to release their water in a manner that had never been seen before. This was part of the great flood that Allah had decreed as a punishment for those who rejected His message and persisted in their arrogance and disbelief.

The verse highlights the absolute authority of Allah over the natural world. He opens the gates of the sky at will, and His command is obeyed instantly. The water that gushed forth was not ordinary rain; it was a catastrophic flood, a sign of His wrath upon the wrongdoers and a means of purification for the earth from their corruption. At the same time, it was a mercy for the believers who boarded the ark with Nūḥ, as they were saved while the disbelievers were drowned.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a powerful reminder of the reality of divine justice and the certainty of Allah's promise. When people persist in sin and reject the truth, no power on earth can protect them from the consequences of their actions. Yet, for those who turn to Allah in sincerity, like Nūḥ did, He opens doors of mercy and salvation. The same rain that destroyed the disbelievers carried the believers to safety. This teaches us that Allah's decrees are always just and wise. It also calls upon us to reflect on our own lives: are we among those who heed the warnings and seek Allah's mercy, or are we heedless like those who were drowned? Let this verse inspire you to turn back to Allah, to trust in His wisdom, and to know that His help is near for those who call upon Him with true faith. The gates of heaven that opened with water for Nūḥ are the same gates that open with mercy, guidance, and provision for those who believe and do righteous deeds.

📜 Verse 9-13 — Al-Qamar

The people of Noah denied before them, and they denied Our servant and said, "A madman," and he was repelled.
So he invoked his Lord, "Indeed, I am overpowered, so help."
Then We opened the gates of the heaven with rain pouring down
And caused the earth to burst with springs, and the waters met for a matter already predestined.
And We carried him on a [construction of] planks and nails,
