Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- الْكَذَّابُ (al-kadhdhāb): The great liar, one who habitually tells falsehoods.
- الْأَشِرُ (al-ashir): The arrogant, insolent one who is haughty and transgresses all bounds due to his pride and vanity.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah Almighty addresses the disbelievers of Thamud who had rejected their Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) and demanded a sign, then arrogantly refused to believe even after the sign was shown to them. They had said mockingly: "Is it upon him alone, from among all of us, that the revelation has been sent down? Rather, he is a liar and an insolent one."
So Allah responds to them with a decisive and powerful statement: "They will know tomorrow who is the great liar, the insolent one." The word "tomorrow" here refers to the near future — the time when the punishment would descend upon them in this world, and ultimately on the Day of Resurrection. At that moment, the truth would become crystal clear to them: Was it Salih (peace be upon him) who was the liar, or was it they themselves who were the arrogant transgressors?
The verse carries a profound lesson: the arrogant ones who mock the truth and belittle the messengers of Allah will soon face a reality that will strip away all their pride. The punishment that came upon Thamud — the terrible cry that seized them in their homes — proved beyond any doubt who was truthful and who was the insolent liar. And on the Day of Judgment, the full reckoning will be even more complete and just.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse teaches us a timeless truth: arrogance and mockery of divine guidance never prevail. The disbelievers of every era have tried to belittle the truth and its carriers, yet Allah always defends His messengers and His religion. For the believer, this is a source of great comfort and strength — when you stand for the truth, even if the whole world mocks you, Allah is with you, and the final victory belongs to Him.
It also serves as a warning to every soul: do not let pride and arrogance blind you from accepting the truth. The one who is truly successful is the one who humbles himself before his Lord and submits to His commands. The arrogant ones may enjoy their fleeting moments of power and mockery, but "tomorrow" — whether in this life or the next — they will see the reality, and that reality will be a decisive testimony against them.
So, dear reader, take heed from this verse: embrace humility, accept the truth with an open heart, and never let your status, wealth, or intellect make you look down upon the guidance of Allah. For the end of the arrogant is humiliation, and the end of the humble believer is eternal success in the Hereafter.
