Surah Al-Qamar — Verse 47

Word Meanings:

• Al-Mujrimūn (الْمُجْرِمِينَ): The criminals — those who persist in disbelief, polytheism, and sin.
• Ḍalāl (ضَلَالٍ): Error, deviation from the truth, and misguidance.
• Su‘ur (سُعُرٍ): The blazing fire of Hell — also interpreted as intense torment, madness, or the burning flames that surround them.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this decisive verse, Allah declares that the criminals — those who reject faith, associate partners with Him, and persist in wrongdoing — are engulfed in two forms of ruin. In this worldly life, they wander in profound misguidance, having strayed far from the path of truth and righteousness. Their hearts are blinded, their reasoning corrupted, and their deeds built upon falsehood. In the Hereafter, they will be cast into the blazing fires of Hell, where they will suffer unbearable torment and anguish. On that Day, they will be dragged on their faces into the Fire, and it will be said to them: "Taste the severity of Hell's punishment!" This is the just recompense for those who turned away from their Lord's signs and followed their own desires instead of divine guidance.

A Call to Reflection:

How tragic is the state of those who trade eternal bliss for fleeting pleasures, and who exchange the light of guidance for the darkness of error! The Qur'an presents this truth so that every soul may pause and reflect: Where am I standing? Am I walking in the light of faith, or am I drifting in the shadows of heedlessness? The door of repentance is open, and the mercy of Allah is vast. Do not let your heart become hardened, nor your soul become accustomed to sin. Return to your Lord before the Day arrives when no excuse will avail, and when the Fire will be the only reality for those who persisted in wrongdoing. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful to those who turn back to Him sincerely.
