Word Meanings:

  • Al-Wazn (الْوَزْنَ): The act of weighing, or the weight itself.
  • Bil-Qist (بِالْقِسْطِ): With justice, fairness, and equity.
  • Tukhsiroo (تُخْسِرُوا): To cause loss, to diminish, or to cheat by giving less than what is due.
  • Al-Mizan (الْمِيزَانَ): The scale, balance, or the instrument of weighing.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah—the Most Merciful, the Most Just—commands His servants to establish weighing with absolute fairness and to never cause loss or deficiency in the balance. The command here is not merely a worldly recommendation; it is a divine obligation that upholds the very fabric of social justice and mutual trust.

The verse calls upon you, O believer, to weigh and measure with complete accuracy, giving others their full due without any reduction, whether in trade, in promises, or in any transaction of life. When you weigh for others, let your scale be true; when you measure for them, let your measure be full. Do not cheat, do not deceive, and do not take advantage of others' trust by diminishing what rightfully belongs to them.

This divine instruction is a reflection of Allah's own attribute of justice, for He has created the heavens and the earth with balance and proportion. As He has set everything in perfect measure, He commands you to mirror that divine justice in your dealings. When you uphold fairness in the smallest of weights, you are, in essence, worshipping Allah through your honesty and integrity.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear Muslim, know that this command is a treasure of wisdom. When you deal justly in your weighing and measuring, you are not only fulfilling a religious duty but also building a society of trust, harmony, and prosperity. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was known as "Al-Amin" (the Trustworthy) even before his prophethood, precisely because of his impeccable honesty in trade and dealings. Let this be your model.

Imagine the blessings that descend upon a community where every transaction is fair, where no one fears being cheated, and where hearts are at peace because justice prevails. This is the beauty of Islam—it elevates even the simplest act of weighing into an act of worship and a means of drawing closer to Allah.

So, O servant of Allah, be steadfast in justice. Let your scale be a witness to your faith, and let your honesty be a beacon that attracts others to the light of Islam. For Allah loves those who are just, and He has promised the most beautiful rewards for those who uphold fairness in all their affairs. Do not let the fleeting gains of cheating deprive you of the eternal blessings of honesty. Choose the path of righteousness, and you will find peace in this life and success in the Hereafter.
