Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • آلَاء (Aalaa): The plural of *alan* (أَلًى), meaning countless blessings, favors, and bounties.
  • تُكَذِّبَانِ (Tukadhdhiban): You both deny or reject (addressed to two parties — mankind and jinn).

Explanation of the Verse:

This magnificent verse addresses both mankind and jinn together, asking them a question that strikes at the heart of gratitude: "So which of the favors of your Lord do you both deny?"

The word *Aalaa* encompasses every blessing — both religious and worldly. It includes the gift of faith, guidance, and the Qur'an, as well as the blessings of health, provision, family, safety, and the very breath we take. The repetition of this verse thirty-one times throughout Surah Ar-Rahman serves a profound purpose: it magnifies the value of these blessings, reminds us of them constantly, and gently rebukes those who would deny or overlook them.

When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) recited this Surah to his companions, the jinn responded beautifully. Every time he reached this verse, they said: "We do not deny any of Your favors, our Lord — all praise is Yours." This teaches us the proper attitude of a believer: when blessings are mentioned, we should acknowledge them, thank Allah for them, and praise Him.

The verse is a call to self-reflection. When you look at your life — your eyes that see, your ears that hear, your heart that beats, the food you eat, the water you drink, the faith in your heart — can you truly say any of these are from other than Allah? And if they are all from Him, how could you ever deny even one?

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is an invitation to open your eyes to the reality of divine mercy. The One who created you, sustains you, and showers you with blessings beyond count — He does not ask for anything in return except your gratitude and obedience. Islam teaches us that gratitude is not merely a word on the tongue, but a way of life. When you recognize the blessings of Allah, your heart fills with love for Him, and that love naturally leads you to worship Him, obey His commands, and draw closer to Him.

So, dear reader — whether you are human or jinn, believer or seeker of truth — pause and ask yourself: Which of your Lord's favors can you honestly deny? The answer will lead you to the only logical conclusion: that Allah is worthy of all praise, all worship, and all gratitude. Let this verse be the key that opens your heart to the beauty of Islam and the sweetness of faith.
