Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Meanings:
- "In hiya illa" – This phrase means "It is nothing but..." and is used to emphasize exclusivity, denying anything beyond what they state.
- "Hayatuna al-dunya" – "Our worldly life" – referring to the life of this world, its pleasures, and its temporary nature.
- "Bimab'uthin" – "Those who will be raised" – meaning resurrected after death for accountability.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah Almighty tells us about the stubborn denial of the disbelievers who rejected the Hereafter. They said: "There is no life except our worldly life, and we will not be resurrected after death." They believed that existence ends with the grave, and they saw no purpose beyond the fleeting pleasures and trials of this world. Their words reflect a deep spiritual blindness, as they reduced all of existence to what they could perceive with their senses and what they could grasp with their limited understanding.
This statement was not merely an intellectual position; it was a defense mechanism to escape moral responsibility. By denying the resurrection, they sought to free themselves from the consequences of their actions, believing they could live without accountability. However, their claim was based on assumption and guesswork, not on certainty or evidence. They spoke as if they had witnessed the end of all things, yet they had no knowledge of what lies beyond death.
The verse also carries a profound lesson for us: the denial of the Hereafter is not just a theological error but a distortion of the very purpose of life. If there were no resurrection, then all the injustice, oppression, and suffering in this world would go unpunished, and all the good deeds, patience, and sacrifice of the righteous would be in vain. But Allah, in His infinite wisdom and justice, has decreed that every soul will be raised and held accountable for what it earned.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, let this verse awaken your heart to the reality of your own existence. The disbelievers of old made the same claim, and yet here we are, centuries later, witnessing the truth of Allah's promise. The world around us is filled with signs of His power—life springing from dead earth, the cycle of day and night, the vastness of the heavens—all pointing to the One who is able to bring the dead to life again. Do not let the temporary attractions of this world deceive you into forgetting the eternal life to come. Every breath you take is a step toward that inevitable meeting with your Lord. Embrace the truth of the resurrection, for it is the key to a life of purpose, hope, and ultimate success in the Hereafter.
