Explanation of the Verse:
This verse exposes the falsehood of what the disbelievers say on the Day of Judgment. When they witness the reality of the Hereafter and the punishment that awaits them, they exclaim: "If only we could be sent back to the world, we would believe and never deny the signs of our Lord!" But Allah refutes their claim, saying: "Nay, it has become clear to them what they used to conceal before." That is, on that Day, everything they hid in their hearts — their hypocrisy, their stubborn denial, and their evil deeds — becomes manifest and undeniable. Their own limbs and bodies will bear witness against them, and the truth they tried to suppress will shine before their eyes.
Then Allah reveals the true nature of their wish: "And even if they were sent back, they would return to what they were forbidden." This means that if, hypothetically, they were given another chance to live in this world, they would not change at all. They would go right back to disbelief, polytheism, and sin, because their hearts were never sincerely inclined to faith. Their desire to return was not born out of genuine repentance, but out of sheer terror and desperation upon seeing the punishment.
Finally, Allah declares: "And indeed, they are liars." They are liars in their claim that they would believe if they were returned to the world. Their past behavior, their persistent denial, and their hardened hearts all prove that their promise was nothing but a false utterance of panic — not a true intention.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, this verse is a profound reminder of the importance of sincerity and truthfulness in our faith. Allah knows what is in our hearts — every hidden intention, every concealed thought. We cannot deceive Him, nor can we bargain with Him on that Day. The time for action is now, in this life, where we have the freedom to choose and the opportunity to repent.
Do not wait until you see the reality of the Hereafter to wish you had believed. Do not be like those who only remember Allah when calamity strikes, only to forget Him when ease returns. The door of repentance is open today — so rush to it with a sincere heart, before the day comes when no return is possible.
Let this verse inspire you to be among those whose outward actions match their inner faith, whose words are backed by deeds, and whose hearts are filled with genuine love for their Creator. For Allah does not look at your outward appearance or your wealth, but at your hearts and your deeds. Make your heart a garden of faith, and your life a testimony to the truth — so that when you meet your Lord, you will do so with a pure and truthful soul.
