Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- وُقِفُوا عَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ: They were detained and brought to stand before their Lord for accountability and rebuke.
- بَلَىٰ: Yes, indeed — an emphatic affirmation used in response to a negative question.
- فَذُوقُوا: So taste — an imperative expressing the onset of punishment.
Tafsir (Explanation):
If you could see, O Messenger, the state of those who denied the Resurrection when they are halted before their Lord on the Day of Judgment — you would witness a sight of utter humiliation and regret. Allah will say to them, rebuking them: "Is this not the truth?" — meaning, is this resurrection and recompense that you used to deny in the worldly life not the absolute reality? At that moment, all their arrogance and denial will vanish, and they will answer with complete submission: "Yes, by our Lord, it is indeed the truth!" They will affirm it with an oath, acknowledging what they once rejected. But this confession will come too late. Allah will then say to them: "Then taste the punishment because you used to disbelieve" — that is, taste now the torment you mocked and denied, as a direct consequence of your disbelief in Allah, His Messenger, and the Day of Judgment.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul: the truth that we deny in this life will become undeniably clear in the next — but by then, acknowledgment will not save us. The disbelievers will confess with their own tongues, swearing by their Lord that what they once rejected is real, yet their confession will only serve as evidence against them. How many of us today live as if there is no accountability, no standing before Allah? This verse awakens the heart to the certainty of that Day — a Day when excuses will be useless, and only faith and righteous deeds will benefit.
Dear reader, do not wait until you stand before your Lord to believe. The Qur'an has already shown you the scene — the regret, the confession, the punishment. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has warned us now so that we may return to Him before it is too late. Embrace the truth today, submit to your Creator, and follow His Messenger ﷺ, so that when you stand before Him, you will be among those who believed without seeing, and who will be greeted with mercy instead of rebuke. The choice is yours — taste the sweetness of faith now, or the bitterness of regret then.
