Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Wajjahtu Wajhiya": I have turned my face, meaning I have directed my entire being, my worship, and my devotion solely towards Allah.
- "Fatara": He who originated and created the heavens and the earth out of nothing, upon no previous example.
- "Hanifan": Inclining away from all falsehood and deviation, turning purely and sincerely towards the truth — the monotheistic faith of pure submission to Allah alone.
Explanation of the Verse:
This is the declaration of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), the father of the prophets and the friend of Allah (Khalilullah). After he had observed the celestial bodies — the star, the moon, and the sun — and witnessed how they set and disappeared, he realized that these created things could never be worthy of worship. They are transient, subject to change, and powerless. So, with absolute certainty and unwavering conviction, he proclaimed: "Indeed, I have turned my face towards Him who created the heavens and the earth, inclining away from all falsehood, and I am not among those who associate partners with Allah."
In this profound statement, Ibrahim (peace be upon him) declares his complete and total devotion to Allah alone. He does not say "I have turned my heart" or "my soul" only, but "my face" — because the face is the noblest part of a person, and turning it signifies the direction of one's entire life, purpose, and worship. He singles out Allah as the Creator of the heavens and the earth — the One who brought them into existence from nothing — and this very act of creation is the greatest proof that He alone deserves worship.
The word "Hanifan" carries a beautiful and deep meaning. It describes a person who turns away from all forms of misguidance and falsehood, and turns wholeheartedly towards the truth. It is the middle path — neither leaning towards the excesses of polytheism nor falling into the neglect of God's worship. It is the pure, unadulterated faith that all the prophets came with, and it is the same faith that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent to revive.
Ibrahim (peace be upon him) then concludes with a powerful negation: "And I am not among those who associate partners with Allah." This is not just a statement of his own belief, but a clear disassociation from the polytheism of his people, who worshipped idols, stars, and celestial bodies. He was standing in the midst of a society steeped in idolatry, yet he boldly declared his complete separation from their false practices.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, this verse invites you to examine your own heart and ask: Where have I directed my face? What is the focus of my life? Is it the pursuit of worldly pleasures, the approval of people, or the worship of the One who created the heavens and the earth?
The declaration of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) is a timeless call to every human being to purify their faith and direct their entire existence towards Allah alone. It teaches us that true freedom lies in freeing ourselves from the servitude of created things — whether they are idols of stone, or the idols of wealth, status, and desire. When you turn your face to Allah, you find peace, purpose, and a connection that nothing in this world can break.
Let this verse be a daily reminder for you. When you wake up, when you pray, when you work, and when you face difficulties — remember that you belong to Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth. Say with confidence, as Ibrahim said: "I have turned my face towards Him who created the heavens and the earth, inclining away from all falsehood, and I am not among those who associate partners with Allah." This is the essence of Islam — pure, sincere, and complete submission to the One True God. And there is no greater honor, no greater joy, and no greater success than to live and die upon this beautiful faith.
