Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues to describe the detestable qualities of the person whom the Prophet (peace be upon him) is commanded not to obey. After mentioning his habitual swearing, his lowliness, his slander and backbiting, and his spreading mischief through tale-carrying, Allah now adds three more of his ugly traits:
First, he is a *miser who withholds good*. He clings tightly to his wealth, refusing to spend it in charitable causes or for the welfare of others. He is not only stingy with his money but also with his time, his effort, and his influence — he blocks every path that leads to goodness, whether it be helping the needy, supporting the truth, or encouraging righteous deeds. His hand is closed, and his heart is even more closed.
Second, he is a *transgressor*. He oversteps the boundaries that Allah has set. He attacks people's honor through slander, violates their rights, and takes what is not lawfully his. He does not respect the limits of fairness, justice, or decency — whether in dealing with people's wealth, their reputations, or their very lives. He is aggressive and oppressive, driven by his desires and arrogance.
Third, he is *steeped in sin*. His sins are not occasional slips or mistakes; rather, they are his constant companions. He persists in wrongdoing without remorse, accumulating sins upon sins until they become a heavy burden on his soul. His heart has become hardened, and his conscience has been silenced.
A Call to Reflection and Righteousness:
Dear reader, reflect on how Allah describes this person — the one who combines miserliness with transgression and persistent sinning. These are not merely individual flaws; they are the signs of a heart that has turned away from its Creator. When a person withholds good, he cuts himself off from the blessings of giving. When he transgresses, he destroys the bonds of trust and mercy between people. And when he persists in sin, he distances himself from the light of guidance.
The Quran presents this description not only to warn the Prophet (peace be upon him) about a specific individual from the pagans of Makkah, but as an eternal lesson for every believer. It is a mirror in which we may examine ourselves: Do we withhold good from others, or do we rush to share what Allah has given us? Do we respect the limits of Allah in our dealings, or do we overstep them for worldly gain? Do we repent from our sins, or do we persist in them?
Islam calls you to be the opposite of all this: be generous, for generosity is a trait of the righteous; be just, for justice is the foundation of peace; and be quick to repent, for Allah's mercy embraces those who turn back to Him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The believer is not a slanderer, nor one who curses, nor one who is obscene or shameless." (Tirmidhi)
So, purify your heart, open your hand, and guard your conduct. Let your life be a testimony to the beauty of Islam — a life of giving, justice, and constant return to Allah. For the one who withholds good, transgresses, and persists in sin is far from the path of the believers, and his end is a painful one. But the one who gives, stays within limits, and seeks forgiveness will find Allah's pleasure and His eternal reward.
