Key Words and Their Meanings:
- تَقَوَّلَ (taqawwala): To fabricate, invent, or falsely attribute something to someone; to speak falsely on behalf of another.
- بَعْضَ الْأَقَاوِيلِ (baʿḍa al-aqāwīl): Some of the sayings or statements; i.e., any portion of speech that was not actually revealed or said.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses a profound and serious matter concerning the truthfulness of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the divine origin of the Qur'an. Allah, the Almighty, declares that if the Prophet had dared to fabricate even a single saying and falsely attribute it to Allah—claiming that it was revelation when it was not—then the consequences would have been swift and severe.
The verse serves as a powerful assertion of the absolute authenticity of the Qur'an. It reassures believers that every word revealed to the Prophet is indeed from Allah, untainted by any human interpolation or personal invention. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was a man of impeccable honesty and integrity, known even before his prophethood as "Al-Amin" (the trustworthy). It is inconceivable that such a person would ever commit such a grave transgression against his Lord.
This verse also carries a profound warning: Allah's protection of His message is absolute. He does not allow falsehood to mix with His truth. The Qur'an is preserved, pure, and unaltered, and this divine safeguard is a mercy to humanity—ensuring that the guidance we follow is genuine and reliable.
For the believer, this instills deep confidence and tranquility. When we read the Qur'an, we are reading the very words of our Creator, delivered through His chosen Messenger without any distortion. This certainty strengthens our faith and motivates us to live by its teachings, knowing that we are following the straight path that leads to eternal success.
Reflect on this: if the Qur'an were not divinely protected, how could it remain so perfectly consistent, so profoundly eloquent, and so timelessly relevant across fourteen centuries? Its preservation is a living miracle, a testament to Allah's promise to guard His final revelation. Let this verse deepen your trust in the Qur'an and increase your devotion to acting upon its guidance, for it is the unshakeable foundation of our faith and the key to our salvation.
