Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Makar" (مَكْر): A cunning scheme, deception, or a carefully devised plot aimed at achieving a hidden goal.
- "Al-Madinah" (المَدِينَة): The city, referring here to the city of Egypt (Memphis), the seat of Pharaoh's power.
- "Nakal" (نَكَال): A severe punishment or exemplary retribution that serves as a deterrent for others.
Tafsir (Interpretation):
When the sorcerers fell into prostration, declaring their faith in the Lord of Moses and Aaron, Pharaoh was struck with fury and disbelief. He turned to them and said: "Have you believed in Him—in Allah, the Lord of Moses—before I have given you permission to do so?!" His words were not a question seeking information, but rather an expression of utter shock and rage that his subjects would dare to make such a momentous decision without his royal consent.
Pharaoh then accused them of conspiracy, claiming: "This is surely a plot you have devised in the city—you and Moses—to drive its people out of it." He alleged that their public display of faith was not genuine conviction, but a pre-arranged scheme between them and Moses to destabilize his rule, turn the people against him, and ultimately seize control of Egypt for themselves and the Children of Israel. He accused them of planning to expel the native Coptic Egyptians from their own land.
Finally, he threatened them with a chilling promise: "So you shall come to know!" — meaning, you will soon witness the terrible consequences of your actions. You will taste a punishment so severe that it will serve as a lesson for all who dare to defy my authority.
This scene reveals the profound blindness of tyranny. Pharaoh, who claimed divinity, could not comprehend that hearts can be transformed by truth in an instant. He saw the sorcerers' faith as a political maneuver because his entire worldview was built on power, control, and conspiracy. He could not fathom the simple, pure reality that when the truth of Allah's signs becomes clear, sincere hearts submit immediately—without waiting for any human permission.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer. The sorcerers were masters of illusion, yet when confronted with the undeniable truth of Musa's miracle, they recognized it instantly and surrendered. Their faith was not born from years of study, but from the clarity of certainty that pierced their hearts. They teach us that true faith is not about status, position, or permission from worldly authorities—it is about the sincere response of the heart to the truth of Allah.
Notice how Allah honored them: they were magicians in the morning, but by the evening, they were martyrs of faith. Their names are recorded in the Quran as examples of courage and conviction. When you embrace Islam or deepen your faith, you may face opposition from those who hold worldly power—family, society, or even governments. But remember: the pleasure of Allah is greater than the approval of any creation. Stand firm, as the sorcerers did, and trust that Allah will honor those who honor Him. The temporary trials of this world are nothing compared to the eternal reward that awaits the patient and the sincere.
