Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- "فَانْسَلَخَ مِنْهَا" (fa-insalakha minha): This vivid expression means "he slipped out of them" or "he cast them off," like a snake shedding its skin. It signifies a complete and total abandonment of the divine signs after having possessed them.
- "فَأَتْبَعَهُ الشَّيْطَانُ" (fa-atba'ahu al-shaytan): Meaning "so Satan pursued him" or "overtook him," indicating that Satan became his constant companion and master after he had distanced himself from guidance.
- "الْغَاوِينَ" (al-ghawin): Those who are misguided, lost, and have deviated from the path of truth, often with a sense of willful ruin.
The Interpretation:
O Messenger, recite to your people the profound and cautionary tale of a man from the Children of Israel to whom Allah granted His clear signs, His proofs, and His revelations. This man learned the divine knowledge, understood its truths, and was fully equipped with the light of guidance. Yet, tragically, he did not act upon what he knew. He shed that sacred knowledge as a snake sheds its skin—smoothly, completely, and without any lingering attachment. He cast the signs of Allah behind his back, preferring his worldly desires and whims over the eternal truth.
Because of this willful rejection, Satan overtook him, becoming his inseparable companion and guide. He who once stood among the people of insight and righteousness fell from that lofty station to become one of the misguided and ruined—a soul that tasted the sweetness of faith only to spit it out and embrace destruction.
This is the most severe warning directed at the scholars and the learned. For what calamity is greater than a person being given the knowledge of Allah, only for that very knowledge to become a witness against him? The scholar who abandons his knowledge is worse than the ignorant person who never knew, for the scholar has no excuse. Knowledge is a responsibility—it demands action. When a person knows the truth and turns away from it, his fall is deeper, his loss is greater, and his regret on the Day of Judgment will be immeasurable.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear believer, let this story be a mirror for your own soul. How often do we learn the verses of Allah, understand the rulings of our religion, and yet fail to implement them in our daily lives? We read about honesty, yet our tongues may slip into deceit. We learn about prayer and its spiritual power, yet we rush through it without presence of heart. We know the harms of backbiting, yet we engage in it casually.
The lesson here is not merely about scholars—it is about every one of us who has been given some measure of divine knowledge. The Quran is not a book to be recited for reward alone; it is a manual for living. Every verse we learn is a trust from Allah. Will we honor that trust by living it, or will we shed it like the snake sheds its skin?
O Allah, make us among those who hear the truth and follow the best of it. Protect us from being among those who know but do not act, and save us from the companionship of Satan. Ameen.
