Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Safāhah (سَفَاهَةٍ): Foolishness, light-mindedness, or deficiency of intellect and sound judgment.
  • Malā' (الْمَلَأُ): The chiefs, leaders, or prominent figures of a community.
  • Nazunnuka (نَظُنُّكَ): We strongly believe or hold a firm suspicion about you.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah narrates the response of the arrogant and disbelieving leaders of Prophet Hud's people to his call. When Hud (peace be upon him) invited them to worship Allah alone and abandon their idols, the elite among his people—those who held power and influence—rejected his message with contempt and arrogance. They said to him: "O Hud, we truly see you in a state of foolishness and deficiency of intellect, because you have abandoned the religion of your forefathers and call us to leave our gods. And we firmly believe that you are among the liars in your claim to be a messenger of Allah."

Their words reveal a deep-seated arrogance and a stubborn refusal to accept the truth. They judged Hud's message not by its soundness or evidence, but by their own pride and attachment to their ancestral traditions. They accused him of foolishness—yet it was they who were foolish for worshipping idols carved by their own hands—and they accused him of lying—yet he was the most truthful among them, calling them to their own salvation.

This exchange teaches us a profound lesson: the enemies of truth often resort to insults and false accusations when they cannot refute the message with logic or evidence. They label the callers to Allah as foolish or insane, and they doubt their sincerity, simply because the truth threatens their status, interests, or inherited customs. But the believer remains steadfast, knowing that Allah is with him, and that the accusations of the ignorant do not diminish the truth in any way.

Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on the patience and courage of Prophet Hud. He stood alone against the powerful elite of his people, facing their mockery and accusations, yet he did not waver. This is the character of the true believer: firm in the face of criticism, unwavering in the face of opposition, and trusting in Allah's promise of victory. When people mock you for your faith or call you foolish for following the truth, remember that the prophets themselves were subjected to the same treatment. Take comfort in their example, and know that the pleasure of Allah and the eternal success of the Hereafter are far greater than the fleeting opinions of people. The truth may be rejected by many, but it remains the truth—and Allah honors those who uphold it with patience and sincerity.

But they denied him, so We saved him and those who were with him in the ship. And We drowned those who denied Our signs. Indeed, they were a blind people.
And to the 'Aad [We sent] their brother Hud. He said, "O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. Then will you not fear Him?"
Said the eminent ones who disbelieved among his people, "Indeed, we see you in foolishness, and indeed, we think you are of the liars."
[Hud] said, "O my people, there is not foolishness in me, but I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds."
I convey to you the messages of my Lord, and I am to you a trustworthy adviser.
