Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Safāhah (سَفَاهَةٌ): Foolishness, weakness of intellect, or light-mindedness; a lack of sound judgment and composure.
  • Rasūl (رَسُولٌ): A messenger sent by Allah with a divine message to guide a specific people.
  • Rabb al-‘Ālamīn (رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ): The Lord and Sustainer of all the worlds—everything that exists, from the heavens and the earth to all that lies between them.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Prophet Hūd (peace be upon him) responded to his people’s accusation that he was a fool or had lost his mind. He firmly and calmly clarified: "O my people, there is no foolishness in me." He did not retaliate with anger or harsh words, but instead addressed them with kindness, calling them "my people" to soften their hearts and remind them of his sincere concern for their welfare. He then declared the truth of his mission: "But I am a messenger from the Lord of all the worlds."

This statement carries profound meaning. Hūd was not merely defending himself; he was redirecting their attention from his person to the One who sent him. He was not speaking from his own desire or imagination—he was delivering a message from the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Sustainer of every being. His calmness, wisdom, and clarity of speech were themselves proof that he was not afflicted with any deficiency of intellect, but rather he was a man of profound insight and divine honour.

Da‘wah Reflection:

This verse teaches us a beautiful lesson in how to respond to mockery or false accusations. When people attack you for your faith, do not lower yourself to their level or respond with anger. Instead, remain dignified, speak with wisdom, and remind them of the greater truth: that you are upon guidance from your Lord. The prophets were the most patient and noble in their responses, and their example is a light for us. How beautiful it is when a believer faces hostility with grace, turning every challenge into an opportunity to call others to the truth with clarity and compassion. Let us strive to emulate this noble character, for the message of Islam is one of mercy, wisdom, and steadfastness.

📜 Verse 65-69 — Al-A'raf

And to the 'Aad [We sent] their brother Hud. He said, "O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. Then will you not fear Him?"
Said the eminent ones who disbelieved among his people, "Indeed, we see you in foolishness, and indeed, we think you are of the liars."
[Hud] said, "O my people, there is not foolishness in me, but I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds."
I convey to you the messages of my Lord, and I am to you a trustworthy adviser.
Then do you wonder that there has come to you a reminder from your Lord through a man from among you, that he may warn you? And remember when He made you successors after the people of Noah and increased you in stature extensively. So remember the favors of Allah that you might succeed.
