Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Nakhirah (نَّخِرَةً): Decayed, brittle bones that have become hollow and crumbled with age, to the point where they have lost all strength and structure.
Explanation of the Verse:
The disbelievers of Makkah, in their stubborn denial of the Hereafter, posed a mocking question: "When we have died and become decayed, hollow bones — crushed and scattered in the earth — shall we truly be brought back to life again?" They said this out of sheer astonishment and rejection, considering it utterly impossible that a human being, after turning to dust and rotten remains, could ever be restored to life. They added: "Such a return would be a losing, false venture" — meaning, if it were to happen, it would be a return to a state of ruin and loss, not to honor or reward.
This verse captures their mindset: they measured the power of Allah by their own limited understanding, forgetting that the One who created them from nothing — from a drop of fluid — is fully capable of recreating them from bones, no matter how decayed. The creation of the heavens and the earth, with all their vastness and perfection, is far greater than the recreation of a human being, and Allah is over all things competent.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect: if you can see with your own eyes how Allah brings forth life from dead earth every spring — how dry, barren soil bursts forth with green vegetation after rain — then why would you doubt His ability to bring you back after death? The One who originated you the first time is not incapable of returning you a second time. Your bones, no matter how decayed, are not hidden from Him; He knows every particle of your being, and nothing escapes His knowledge.
Do not let the whispers of denial harden your heart. The resurrection is not a myth or a fairy tale — it is a certain truth that every soul will witness. Prepare for that Day while you still have time, for on that Day, no excuse will be accepted, and no return will be possible. The same bones that you think are lost forever will be gathered, and you will stand before your Lord, accountable for every deed you did in this worldly life.
