Explanation of the Verse:
This verse captures the response of those who denied the resurrection, reacting to the news that they would be brought back to life after death. When they were told that they would be returned to their original state — alive once more after their bones had decayed into dust — they scoffed and said: "If such a return were to happen, it would be a losing affair indeed!"
Their statement carries two possible meanings, both rooted in their arrogance and disbelief. First, they meant it was a *false* and *impossible* claim — something so absurd that it could never occur, and thus anyone who believed in it would be a fool. Second, they meant that even if it were true, it would be a *ruinous* return for them, because they knew deep down that if they were resurrected, they would face the consequences of their rejection of the truth. In their hearts, they feared this outcome, but they masked their fear with mockery and denial.
This is the nature of those who turn away from the message of Allah — they meet the truth with ridicule rather than reflection. Yet, their mockery does not change the reality: the resurrection is certain, and on that Day, every soul will be recompensed for what it earned. The one who truly loses is not the one who believes in the return, but the one who denies it and lives a life of heedlessness, for their loss will be eternal.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and ponder: is it truly "losing" to believe in a life after death where justice prevails and every deed is accounted for? Or is the real loss in living as if this world is all there is, chasing fleeting pleasures while neglecting the purpose of our existence? The Qur'an invites you to open your heart to the truth — that the Creator who brought you into existence from nothing is fully capable of bringing you back after death. This belief is not a source of loss; rather, it is the fountain of hope, purpose, and accountability. It transforms your life into a journey of meaning, where every good deed is a treasure stored for the Hereafter, and every moment is an opportunity to draw closer to your Lord. Embrace this truth, and you will find that the true "return" is not a losing one, but a winning one — a return to eternal bliss in the presence of the Most Merciful.
