Those that run [their courses] and disappear -

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • الْجَوَارِ (Al-Jawari): The planets or celestial bodies that run their courses, moving swiftly in their orbits.
  • الْكُنَّسِ (Al-Kunnas): Those that hide or withdraw, like the gazelle that retreats into its shelter (kinnas). This refers to the celestial bodies that disappear from sight, such as stars that set or become hidden by the light of day.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Allah Almighty takes an oath by the celestial bodies that move swiftly in their orbits and then conceal themselves—just as a gazelle hides in its resting place. These are the stars and planets that travel through the cosmos, and when dawn breaks, their light fades and they vanish from the observer’s sight, as if they were retreating into a hidden sanctuary. The imagery is both precise and poetic: the same celestial bodies that shine brilliantly at night are the ones that gracefully withdraw at the approach of daylight, obeying the divine command that governs their motion.

This oath is not a mere rhetorical flourish; it is a profound call to reflect on the order and precision of the universe. The stars that run their courses and then hide are signs of a Creator who has absolute control over all things—who sets them in motion and commands them to disappear at will. If such mighty celestial bodies submit so perfectly to His will, how much more should we, as human beings, submit to the guidance He has revealed?

The verse is part of a series of oaths in which Allah swears by the phenomena of the natural world to affirm the truth of the Qur’an and the message of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). By drawing our attention to the heavens, Allah invites us to look beyond the material world and recognize the majesty of the One who created it all. The stars that hide at dawn remind us that everything in existence—no matter how grand—is under Allah’s command, and that His revelation is the ultimate truth that guides us to success in this life and the Hereafter.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, when you gaze at the night sky and see the stars scattered like pearls, and then watch them fade with the coming of dawn, let this be a reminder of Allah’s infinite power and wisdom. The same Allah who orders the stars to run and hide has sent down the Qur’an as a light for humanity. Just as the stars are constant in their obedience, let us strive to be constant in our devotion. The Qur’an is not a book of the past; it is a living guide for every generation. Embrace it, reflect on its verses, and let it illuminate your path, for in it lies the key to peace in this world and salvation in the next. Allah’s signs are all around you—open your heart, and you will find Him.
