Word Meanings:
- Adraaka (أَدْرَاكَ): "What will make you know" or "What can convey to you" — an expression used in the Quran to emphasize the immense magnitude and incomprehensible nature of something. It highlights that human intellect alone cannot fully grasp the reality being described.
- Yawm al-Deen (يَوْمُ الدِّينِ): The Day of Recompense and Judgment — the day when all deeds, words, and intentions will be accounted for and recompensed with absolute justice.
Explanation of the Verse:
After mentioning the Day of Judgment in the preceding verses, Allah magnifies its significance by posing this rhetorical question: "And what will make you know what the Day of Recompense is?" This is a powerful literary device that serves to elevate the matter to a level beyond ordinary human comprehension. It is as if Allah is saying: "You have heard of this Day, but do you truly understand its magnitude? What means do you have to grasp its reality?"
The question is repeated in the following verse (18) for even greater emphasis, indicating that no matter how much knowledge or imagination a person possesses, the true nature of that Day remains beyond their reach. It is a Day when every soul will stand before its Creator, when all veils will be lifted, and when the truth of every action — from the weight of an atom of good to an atom of evil — will be laid bare. On that Day, no intercessor will benefit without Allah's permission, no wealth or lineage will avail, and the sole authority will belong to Allah alone, the One who cannot be overpowered or challenged.
The verse instills in the believer a profound sense of awe and reverence, reminding us that we are preparing for an event of unimaginable gravity. It calls upon us to live with awareness, to treat our deeds with seriousness, and to never underestimate the consequences of our choices.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse is a loving call from Allah to awaken our hearts. Imagine being told about a life-changing event but being unable to fully comprehend its scale — this is precisely the position we are in regarding the Day of Judgment. Yet, Allah does not leave us in ignorance; He has sent His messengers, revealed His books, and given us clear signs so that we may prepare. The very fact that Allah emphasizes this Day's greatness is a mercy in itself — it is an invitation to reflect, to repent, and to strive for what pleases Him. Let this verse be a reminder that our short life in this world is but a fleeting moment compared to the eternal reality that awaits. Embrace the guidance of the Quran, and let the awareness of that Great Day transform your daily actions into acts of worship, filled with sincerity and hope in Allah's boundless mercy.
