But as for he who is given his record behind his back,

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ūtiya Kitābahu – Given his book/record of deeds.
  • Warā'a Ẓahrihi – Behind his back; meaning his left hand is twisted behind his back to receive the record.

Explanation of the Verse:

After mentioning the one who receives his book in his right hand with ease and joy, Allah now turns to the opposite fate: "But as for the one who is given his record behind his back" – this refers to the disbeliever who rejects Allah and His messengers. On the Day of Judgment, his book of deeds will be placed in his left hand, and his hand will be twisted behind his back as a sign of humiliation and disgrace. This posture is itself a profound symbol: just as he turned his back on Allah's revelation in this world – ignoring the Qur'an, rejecting the truth, and living heedlessly – so too will he receive his record from behind, as if the very book of his deeds is thrown at him in rejection.

This imagery carries a deep lesson: the one who turned away from Allah's guidance in life will be turned away from mercy on that Day. His own deeds, which he thought were hidden or insignificant, will be brought forth in the most shameful manner. The position of the hand behind the back also indicates that he cannot even look at his record with hope; instead, it is presented as a testimony against him.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on this scene. The One who created you and knows every breath you take has recorded every action, every word, and every intention. Nothing is lost, nothing is forgotten. The disbeliever who lived arrogantly, feeling secure in his wealth and pleasures, will suddenly face the reality he denied. But you – you have the chance now, in this life, to open the Book of Allah, to read it with your own eyes, to let it guide your heart, and to live by it. Do not be among those who throw the Qur'an behind their backs. Instead, be among those who embrace it, who let it illuminate their path, and who will receive their record in their right hand on a Day when every soul will find what it has done present before it. Turn to Allah now, before that Day comes when turning back will be impossible.

📜 Verse 8-12 — Al-Inshiqaq

8فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًا يَسِيرًا
He will be judged with an easy account
9وَيَنقَلِبُ إِلَىٰ أَهْلِهِ مَسْرُورًا
And return to his people in happiness.
10وَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِيَ كِتَابَهُ وَرَاءَ ظَهْرِهِ
But as for he who is given his record behind his back,
11فَسَوْفَ يَدْعُو ثُبُورًا
He will cry out for destruction
12وَيَصْلَىٰ سَعِيرًا
And [enter to] burn in a Blaze.
