Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Yad'u (يَدْعُو): He will call out, invoke, or supplicate.
  • Thubūran (ثُبُورًا): Complete destruction, ruin, or utter perdition; a cry of woe and devastation.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse describes the state of the disbeliever who receives his Book of Deeds from behind his back on the Day of Judgment — a sign of utter disgrace and rejection. When he sees the record of his deeds and the terrible fate awaiting him, he will cry out in despair, calling for his own destruction: "Woe to me! Let me be destroyed!" This is the cry of a soul overwhelmed by regret and terror, realizing that there is no escape from the consequences of its disbelief and sins.

The one who is addressed here is the person who lived his life in arrogance and heedlessness, delighting in worldly pleasures without any thought of the Hereafter. He assumed that he would never be resurrected or held accountable. But on that Day, the truth will be undeniable, and his cry for annihilation will go unanswered — for the time of return has come, and every soul will face exactly what it earned.

This verse serves as a profound reminder that the fleeting joys of this world — which often lead a person to forget their Creator — are nothing compared to the eternal reality that awaits. The one who lives only for immediate gratification, ignoring the purpose of his existence, will find himself in a state of utter hopelessness when the veil is lifted. Yet, Allah, in His perfect justice and mercy, does not wrong anyone; rather, it is the person himself who has wronged his own soul by choosing blindness over guidance.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is not merely a warning — it is an invitation to wake up before it is too late. Allah, the Most Merciful, has given us this life as a test and a chance to return to Him. He has sent His messengers, revealed His Books, and made the path of guidance clear. The door of repentance remains open until the moment of death. So, do not be like those who are deceived by worldly pleasures and forget their ultimate return. Turn to your Lord now, with a sincere heart, and you will find Him Forgiving and Compassionate. For on that Day, the believers who strove in obedience will receive their Books in their right hands, with joy and honor, while the heedless will cry for a destruction that will never come. Choose today the path that leads to eternal bliss, and you will never regret it.

And return to his people in happiness.
10وَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِيَ كِتَابَهُ وَرَاءَ ظَهْرِهِ
But as for he who is given his record behind his back,

He will cry out for destruction

And [enter to] burn in a Blaze.
13إِنَّهُ كَانَ فِي أَهْلِهِ مَسْرُورًا
Indeed, he had [once] been among his people in happiness;
