Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Ghafoor (الْغَفُورُ): The One Who forgives extensively and repeatedly; He conceals sins and pardons them completely, no matter how great or numerous they are.
- Al-Wadood (الْوَدُودُ): The Most Loving, the Affectionate; the One Who loves His righteous servants and showers them with His mercy, kindness, and care.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah describes Himself with two of His most beautiful attributes, bringing comfort and hope to the believers. He is Al-Ghafoor — the One Who forgives the sins of His servants who turn to Him in sincere repentance. His forgiveness is not limited or conditional; it encompasses all sins, regardless of their magnitude, as long as the servant returns to Him with a truthful heart. He does not merely overlook sins — He erases them entirely and transforms them into good deeds for the penitent.
He is also Al-Wadood — the Most Loving and Affectionate. This attribute reflects His profound love for His righteous servants, His saints, and those who draw near to Him through obedience and devotion. He showers them with His mercy, guides them to what is best, answers their supplications, and protects them from harm. His love is not like the love of creation, which is often conditional or fleeting; rather, His love is eternal, perfect, and manifests in countless blessings — both seen and unseen. He "befriends" His servants by forgiving them, and His forgiveness itself is an expression of His deep love for them.
Together, these two names teach us a beautiful reality: Allah's forgiveness is not cold or distant — it is an act of love. When He forgives, He does so with warmth and affection, welcoming the repentant servant back into His fold as a beloved friend. This is why the verse brings such tranquility to the hearts of believers: no matter how far we have strayed, our Lord is waiting with open arms of mercy and love.
A Call to the Reader:
Dear reader, reflect on this profound truth: the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the One whose power is absolute and whose justice is perfect, describes Himself as the Forgiving and the Loving. This is an open invitation to you — no matter what you have done, no matter how heavy your burdens of sin may feel, His door of forgiveness is never closed. He does not merely pardon you; He loves you. He delights in your return to Him, just as a loving parent rejoices at the return of a lost child.
So, do not despair of Allah's mercy, and do not let shame keep you away from Him. Turn to Him today, in the quiet of your heart, and say: "O Allah, You are Al-Ghafoor and Al-Wadood — forgive me and love me." For He has promised that when a servant draws closer to Him by a handspan, He draws closer to that servant by an arm's length. His love is real, His forgiveness is certain, and His mercy is greater than your sins. Seize this moment — it may be the turning point of your life, the beginning of a beautiful relationship with your Lord that will bring you peace in this world and eternal bliss in the Hereafter.
