📜

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • At-Turāth (التُّرَاث): The inheritance or legacy left behind by the deceased, including wealth, property, and rights.
  • Aklan Lammā (أَكْلًا لَّمًّا): Devouring greedily and completely — "lamm" signifies gathering and sweeping up everything without leaving any portion, consuming it all in an insatiable manner.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse exposes a grave moral corruption prevalent among the people addressed: they consume inheritance with ruthless greed, seizing the entire estate without regard for the rightful shares of others. The term "lamm" conveys the image of someone who sweeps up every crumb, leaving nothing behind — they take not only their own lawful portion but also devour the portions belonging to the weak and vulnerable, such as orphans, women, and young children who cannot defend their rights.

This practice reflects a heart enslaved to worldly gain, where justice and compassion are cast aside in favor of selfish accumulation. The verse follows a series of condemnations of those who fail to honor the dignity of the needy, and it strikes at the root of social injustice: the exploitation of those who have no power to claim what is rightfully theirs.

A Call to Reflection and Reform:

Dear reader, pause and consider: how often do we see wealth inherited and fought over, while the rights of the vulnerable are trampled? Islam came to establish a system of justice where every soul receives its due — the orphan, the widow, the poor, and the weak are all protected by divine law. The Quran does not merely forbid this greed; it invites you to a higher standard of character, where generosity replaces hoarding, and where you see wealth as a trust from Allah, not a prize to be seized.

Let this verse awaken your conscience. When you inherit or distribute wealth, ask yourself: Am I fulfilling the rights of others? Am I honoring the trust Allah placed in my hands? True success lies not in accumulating more, but in using what you have to please your Lord and uplift His creation. Embrace this divine guidance, and you will find peace in this life and salvation in the next — for Allah loves those who are just and merciful, and He promises a beautiful reward to those who purify their hearts from greed.
