Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- Thamud (ثَمُودَ): The people of Prophet Salih (peace be upon him), a tribe known for their immense strength and architectural skill.
- Jaaboo (جَابُوا): To cut, carve, or hew out. It implies a deliberate and skilled act of shaping something solid.
- As-Sakhr (الصَّخْرَ): The rock or solid stone, specifically referring to the mountains.
- Bil-Waad (بِالْوَادِ): In the valley, referring to the valley of Al-Hijr (Mada'in Salih), a place between the Hijaz and Tabuk.
The Interpretation:
After mentioning the fate of the people of 'Aad, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) turns our attention to another mighty nation of the past: the people of Thamud. They were the successors to 'Aad in strength and were given even greater skills in stonework. The verse asks us to reflect on their end, saying: "And with Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley?"
These were a people who possessed extraordinary physical power. They did not merely build with stones; they *hewed* the very mountains, carving for themselves magnificent, secure homes within the solid rock of the valley. They were master engineers and architects, leaving behind monumental structures that still stand as a testament to their skill. The word "jaaboo" conveys the sense of cutting through and shaping, a task that would be impossible for ordinary people, but which they accomplished with apparent ease.
Yet, despite this immense power and the prosperity it brought them, they fell into arrogance and transgression. They rejected the message of their Prophet, Salih (peace be upon him), and demanded a miracle. When Allah provided them with the she-camel as a sign, they hamstrung it in defiance, and their fate was sealed. A single, devastating blast from Allah destroyed them and their magnificent carved homes, leaving their ruins as a lesson for all who would come after them.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse is a powerful reminder that worldly strength, skill, and architectural marvels are not what grant a person or a nation true security. The people of Thamud were more powerful than us in construction and physical might, yet their power could not protect them from the decree of Allah when they transgressed His limits. Their carved rocks, which were their pride, became their tombs and a symbol of their destruction.
So, let us not be deceived by the advancements of our own time. Let us not be proud of our buildings, our technology, or our physical abilities. True honor and safety lie not in what we can build with our hands, but in how we build our relationship with our Creator. Let us use the strength and intelligence Allah has given us to obey Him, to help others, and to seek His pleasure. For the One who created the mountains and the rocks is more powerful than all of them, and His promise is true: those who are arrogant will be humbled, and those who are humble and grateful will be raised in honor. Reflect on these ruins of the past, and let them guide you to the path of success in this life and the Hereafter.
