Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Jibal (الْجِبَالُ): The mountains, the firm and massive structures of the earth.
  • Al-‘Ihn (الْعِهْنِ): Wool, specifically colored wool.
  • Al-Manfūsh (الْمَنفُوش): Carded or teased wool that has been separated into fine, loose fibers, scattered and light.

Explanation of the Verse:

On that Day of Judgment, the mountains—those colossal, immovable fixtures of the earth that seem eternal—will lose all their solidity and grandeur. They will become like carded wool that has been teased apart by hand: light, fluffy, and scattered into tiny fragments. Just as wool fibers separate and drift away with the slightest breeze, the mountains will break apart into particles, moving swiftly and effortlessly through the air until they vanish completely, leaving the earth level and bare.

This imagery strikes at the heart of human reliance on stability. We look at mountains and see permanence, strength, and refuge. Yet on that Day, the Almighty—Who created them with a single command—will reduce them to floating dust. Nothing on this earth, no matter how mighty, will withstand the power of its Creator. The mountains, once a symbol of steadfastness, will become a symbol of utter submission to Allah’s will.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, if the mountains—those giants of rock and stone—cannot endure the terror of that Day, then what of us? How can we, in our weakness and heedlessness, afford to turn away from the One who holds all power? This verse is not merely a description of a future event; it is a wake-up call. It invites you to look at the world around you and realize that everything you rely upon is temporary. The only true refuge is in Allah, the Ever-Lasting, the All-Powerful.

Let this image soften your heart. If the hardest of creation becomes like soft wool, then the hearts that are hard and heedless must also soften—now, in this life, through remembrance of Allah and submission to His guidance. Do not wait until the Day when every mountain crumbles and every soul stands alone. Turn to your Lord today, and let your heart be like that wool: gentle, humble, and ready to be shaped by His mercy. For on that Day, only those who sought Him will find peace.

📜 Verse 3-7 — Al-Qari'ah

And what can make you know what is the Striking Calamity?
It is the Day when people will be like moths, dispersed,
And the mountains will be like wool, fluffed up.
Then as for one whose scales are heavy [with good deeds],
He will be in a pleasant life.
