Word Meanings:

  • Ummatan wāḥidah (أُمَّةً وَاحِدَةً): A single community or nation united upon one faith and one way of life.
  • Lā yazālūna (لَا يَزَالُونَ): They will not cease; they will continue to be.
  • Mukhtalifīn (مُخْتَلِفِينَ): Differing, divided, or at variance with one another.

Explanation of the Verse:

O Messenger, if your Lord had willed it, He could have made all of humanity a single community—united upon one faith, the faith of Islam, with no division or discord among them. But His divine wisdom decreed otherwise. He did not will that all people be forced into belief, for He has granted them free will and the capacity to choose. And so, by His wise design, people will never cease to differ—some believing, some disbelieving; some following guidance, others straying into error. This difference is not a flaw in creation, but a manifestation of divine wisdom, for it is through this diversity that the truth becomes distinct from falsehood, and the sincere seeker is distinguished from the obstinate denier.

This difference arises from the choices people make—some follow their desires and oppress others, while others submit to their Lord and seek His pleasure. The Prophet ﷺ was not sent to force people into faith, but to convey the message clearly and to call them with wisdom and beautiful admonition. The difference among people in religion and belief is a test from Allah, and on the Day of Judgment, He will judge between them concerning that over which they used to differ.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, ponder this profound truth: the diversity of religions and beliefs around you is not a random accident—it is part of Allah’s grand plan. He created you with a mind to think, a heart to feel, and a soul to seek Him. He did not leave you without guidance; He sent messengers, revealed books, and made the path of truth clear. The difference among people is a reminder that faith is a choice—a precious gift that must be embraced willingly, not forced. So seize this opportunity! Turn to your Lord with a sincere heart, embrace the truth of Islam, and be among those who are united upon the straight path. For on that Day when all differences are settled, the believers will rejoice in the mercy and pleasure of their Lord, while those who rejected the truth will regret their choice. Do not let your soul remain in doubt—seek knowledge, reflect on the signs of Allah, and let your heart find peace in submission to Him. Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.

📜 Verse 116-120 — Hud

So why were there not among the generations before you those of enduring discrimination forbidding corruption on earth - except a few of those We saved from among them? But those who wronged pursued what luxury they were given therein, and they were criminals.
And your Lord would not have destroyed the cities unjustly while their people were reformers.
And if your Lord had willed, He could have made mankind one community; but they will not cease to differ.
Except whom your Lord has given mercy, and for that He created them. But the word of your Lord is to be fulfilled that, "I will surely fill Hell with jinn and men all together."
And each [story] We relate to you from the news of the messengers is that by which We make firm your heart. And there has come to you, in this, the truth and an instruction and a reminder for the believers.
