Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- ʿishāʾ (عِشَاءً): The time of early evening, after sunset, when darkness begins to fall.
- yabkūn (يَبْكُونَ): They weep or cry, but here it implies *feigned weeping*—pretending to cry to deceive.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After the brothers had cast their brother Yusuf into the dark well and left him there, they returned to their father Yaʿqūb (peace be upon him) at nightfall—choosing the cover of darkness to hide their guilt and make their deception easier. They came weeping, their eyes filled with tears, their voices choked with sorrow, as if overwhelmed by grief. Yet their tears were not genuine; they were manufactured, theatrical displays meant to soften their father’s heart and make their fabricated story more believable. They knew that a father, seeing his sons in such a state, would be less likely to question their account and more inclined to accept their words without suspicion.
This verse exposes the cunning of their scheme: they chose the evening hour, when emotions run high and judgment is clouded, and they added the performance of weeping to lend an air of sincerity to their lie. Their outward tears masked an inward coldness, for they had cast their own brother into a pit and now returned with false lamentation. Yet Allah, the All-Knowing, was fully aware of their deceit, and His plan for Yusuf was already unfolding—a plan that would turn their treachery into a means of elevation for Yusuf and a lesson for all of humanity.
A Call to Reflection:
How often do we see people use tears and emotional displays to mask falsehood? This scene teaches us the importance of sincerity in our words and actions. A believer’s tears should flow from a heart that fears Allah and feels compassion for others—not from a desire to manipulate. Let us be people of truth, whose outward appearance matches our inner reality, for Allah sees what is hidden in the breasts. And let us take comfort in knowing that even when others plot against us, Allah’s plan is greater, and His justice will always prevail. The story of Yusuf reminds us that patience in the face of betrayal leads to honor, and that the One who sees every tear—whether genuine or false—will never abandon the sincere believer.
