Key Words and Meanings:

  • Salsāl (صلصال): Dry clay that makes a sound when struck or tapped.
  • Ḥama’ (حمإ): Black, fermented mud whose color and odor have changed.
  • Masnūn (مسنون): Shaped or molded into a form; also interpreted as having a foul smell due to prolonged exposure.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah (Glorified be He) declares: "And indeed, We created man from dried clay, from black, fermented mud that has been shaped."

The "man" referred to here is Prophet Adam (peace be upon him), the father of all humanity. He is called "insān" (human) because of the covenant entrusted to him, which he forgot — and all his descendants share in this nature. The verse describes the stages of Adam's creation: he was formed from dry clay (salsāl) — clay that is not yet baked, but so dry that it produces a ringing sound when tapped. This clay originated from ḥama’ masnūn — black, fermented mud whose color and smell had changed over time, and which had been molded into the shape of a human being.

This description highlights the humble origin of humankind. We were not created from something noble or precious in worldly terms, but from dark, odorous mud. Yet, Allah honored this creation by breathing His spirit into it and elevating it above many of His creations. This teaches us profound humility — no human being has any reason for arrogance or pride based on lineage, wealth, or status, for we all share the same humble beginning.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Reflect, dear reader, on the greatness of the Creator who transformed lifeless, stinking clay into a being capable of knowledge, love, worship, and eternal life. If Allah could create such a magnificent creature from such humble materials, then surely He is capable of resurrecting us after death — just as He will remind us later in this very chapter. Let this verse fill your heart with gratitude and awe. You are not a random accident; you are a deliberate, honored creation of the Most Merciful. Your origin may be humble, but your purpose is sublime: to know your Lord, worship Him, and attain His pleasure. So let not your heart be proud, and let not your soul despair — for the One who shaped you from clay is the One who guides you to paradise.

And the jinn We created before from scorching fire.
28وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ إِنِّي خَالِقٌ بَشَرًا مِّن صَلْصَالٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ
And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "I will create a human being out of clay from an altered black mud.
