Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Al-Jann (الجَانّ): The father of the jinn, referring to Iblis (Satan) before his fall from grace. It is also used to denote the origin of the jinn species.
  • Min qabl (مِن قَبْلُ): "Before" — meaning before the creation of Adam (peace be upon him).
  • Nar as-Samum (نَارِ السَّمُوم): The intensely hot, scorching fire — a fire that penetrates the pores of the skin and has no smoke, described as the purest and most penetrating form of heat.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) informs us of the origin of the jinn — a creation distinct from humankind. He states that He created the father of the jinn, who is Iblis, before the creation of Adam (peace be upon him), from a fire of extreme and penetrating heat — a scorching wind-like flame that burns without smoke. This highlights the contrast between the origins of the two species: humans were created from clay, while the jinn were created from fire. This difference in origin explains the fundamental difference in their natures and tendencies. The verse also establishes the chronological precedence of the jinn over humanity, reminding us of the ancient enmity that Iblis holds against the descendants of Adam — an enmity that stems from his arrogance and pride when he was commanded to prostrate to Adam. This serves as a profound reminder for every believer to remain vigilant against the whispers of Satan, who was created before us and has sworn to lead humanity astray until the Day of Judgment. Yet, Allah, in His infinite mercy, has granted us the means of protection through faith, remembrance of Him, and adherence to His guidance — a protection that no fire-born enemy can overcome, for the light of faith extinguishes the flames of temptation. Let this verse inspire you to reflect on the greatness of your Creator, who fashioned every being with perfect wisdom, and to seek refuge in Him from the evil of the jinn and mankind alike, for He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, and the Protector of the believers.
