Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Ayatan" (آيَةً): A clear sign, lesson, or evidence that points to a profound truth.
- "Li'l-Mu'minin" (لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ): For those who truly believe in Allah and His messengers, and who submit to His commands.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah draws our attention to the fate of the people of Lot—how their entire civilization was overturned and destroyed as a consequence of their persistent sin and defiance of Allah's message. The verse declares that in this historical event lies a profound and unmistakable sign for the believers. This sign is not merely a story of the past; it is a living testimony to Allah's absolute power, His justice, and His unwavering support for His righteous servants.
For the believer, this sign serves multiple purposes. First, it reinforces certainty (yaqeen) that Allah's promise of victory for the truth and punishment for falsehood is real and inevitable. Second, it is a call to reflection—to look at the ruins of past nations and understand that no power, wealth, or social status can protect anyone from Allah's decree when His commands are violated. Third, it strengthens the heart of the believer in times of trial, reminding them that the wicked may flourish temporarily, but their end is destruction, while the believers' end is honor and salvation.
The verse specifically addresses the believers because they are the ones who benefit from such signs. They look at the world with eyes of insight, not just sight. They see beyond the physical remains of destroyed nations and perceive the divine wisdom and justice behind every event. For them, history is not random; it is a series of lessons from the All-Wise Creator.
Da'wah Message:
Dear reader, this verse invites you to open your heart to the signs of Allah scattered throughout history and your own life. Every event, every story of the past, and every moment of your existence carries a message from your Lord. The destruction of past nations was not an act of cruelty—it was a mercy, a warning so that you might not repeat their mistakes. Allah does not destroy a people until He has sent them clear guidance and given them ample opportunity to change.
So, let this verse awaken your consciousness. Look at the world around you with the eyes of a believer. See the hand of Allah in every sunrise, every trial, and every blessing. The Qur'an is not a book of ancient tales; it is a living guide, and its stories are mirrors reflecting your own choices. The sign is before you—will you be among those who see, reflect, and return to your Lord with a sincere heart? The door of repentance is always open, and Allah's mercy is far greater than His wrath. Do not let the lessons of the past pass you by; let them transform you into a servant who walks the path of righteousness with certainty and hope.
