Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Aykah (الأيكة): A dense, thickly intertwined grove of trees. It refers to the place where the people of Prophet Shu'ayb (peace be upon him) resided — a land with abundant trees and greenery.
- Zalimeen (ظالمين): Wrongdoers, oppressors — those who transgress against themselves and others by committing injustice, particularly through disbelief and rejection of the truth.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse draws our attention to another community that met a tragic end due to their persistent wrongdoing — the people of Al-Aykah, who were the nation of Prophet Shu'ayb (peace be upon him). They were called by this name because they lived in a lush, verdant area with dense, intertwined trees — a land of beauty and abundance.
Despite the blessings Allah had bestowed upon them, they were wrongdoers — and their wrongdoing was of the most severe kind. They rejected the message of their prophet, refused to worship Allah alone, and persisted in their corrupt practices, including cheating in trade and spreading corruption in the land. Their injustice was not merely against themselves; it was a rebellion against their Creator and a source of harm to their own souls.
The verse uses a powerful rhetorical style to emphasize that their wrongdoing was an established, undeniable fact — it was not a minor slip or a momentary error, but a deep-rooted state of transgression. They had every opportunity to believe, yet they chose disbelief. They had every reason to be grateful, yet they chose ingratitude.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder this: these people lived in a place of natural beauty and abundance — trees, water, and fertile land surrounded them. Yet none of these blessings protected them from the consequence of their injustice. Allah does not punish out of cruelty, but out of perfect justice. He sent them a prophet, showed them signs, and gave them time — but when they persisted in their wrongdoing, His punishment was inevitable.
This verse serves as a timeless reminder for us today. We too live surrounded by blessings — health, wealth, families, and opportunities. The question is: are we using these blessings to draw closer to Allah, or are we, like the people of Al-Aykah, falling into forms of injustice — whether by neglecting our duties to Allah, harming others, or following our desires over the truth?
The beauty of the Quran is that it does not merely tell us stories of the past — it invites us to learn, to reflect, and to change our course before it is too late. Let the fate of these people be a lesson that awakens our hearts. Let us examine our own lives: Where are we being unjust? Where are we neglecting the rights of Allah and His creation? The door of repentance is open, and Allah's mercy is vast — but it must be seized before the opportunity passes.
May Allah protect us from being among the wrongdoers, and may He guide us to the straight path — the path of those who believe, do good, and turn to Him in sincerity.
