Surah Al-Hijr — Verse 79

Tafsir (Explanation):

After mentioning the destruction of the people of Lot and the people of Shu'ayb, Allah tells us that He took vengeance upon them for their persistent disbelief and their rejection of the messengers sent to them. The people of Lot were destroyed by a devastating punishment — their town was turned upside down and they were pelted with stones of baked clay — while the people of Shu'ayb (the dwellers of the thicket) were seized by the punishment of the Day of the Shadow and the mighty blast.

Then Allah draws our attention to a profound sign for those who reflect: "And indeed, both of them are on a clear, visible road." This means that the ruins of these destroyed towns lie along the very highways that people travel upon in their journeys. The remains of their dwellings and the traces of their punishment are not hidden in some remote, unknown corner — rather, they are right there, in plain sight, on well-known routes that caravans and travelers pass by constantly.

This is a powerful reminder that the lessons of history are not far from us. The very ground we walk upon may hold the remnants of nations that were destroyed for their arrogance and sin. Yet, how many of us pause to reflect? How many of us look at these signs and take heed?

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, Allah placed these ruins on the main roads — not in hidden valleys — so that every passerby might stop, think, and say: "These were people like us. They had strength, wealth, and power. But when they defied their Lord and rejected His messengers, nothing could save them. So what is my situation? Am I following their path, or am I on the path of guidance?"

The Quran is not merely a book of stories; it is a book of guidance. Every mention of past nations is a mirror for us to examine our own lives. If we see in ourselves any resemblance to their arrogance, their heedlessness, or their rejection of truth, we must hasten to repent before the punishment descends upon us.

Let these visible ruins be a reminder that Allah's justice is certain, and His mercy is open to those who turn back to Him. The road to salvation is also clear and visible — it is the road of faith, sincerity, and obedience to Allah and His Messenger. Choose that road, and you will find peace in this life and success in the Hereafter.
