Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah — glorified and exalted be He — is the One Who has subjugated the sea for your benefit, O humanity. He has made it a servant to you, despite its vastness and power. From it, you eat fresh, tender fish that you catch, providing you with wholesome nourishment. From it, you extract precious ornaments like pearls and coral, which you wear as adornment and beautify yourselves with.
And you see the great ships sailing upon it, cleaving through the waves with their mighty hulls, carrying you and your goods across the waters. Through these ships, you seek the bounty of your Lord — engaging in trade and commerce to earn lawful provision. All of these blessings are bestowed upon you so that you might be grateful to Allah, acknowledging His immense favor upon you, and so that you worship Him alone, without associating any partner with Him.
Reflect, dear reader, upon this magnificent scene: the same sea that can be terrifying and destructive is rendered gentle and serviceable by the will of its Creator. The fish within it become your food, the pearls within its depths become your adornment, and its surface becomes a highway for your ships. This is not by chance — it is the mercy of Allah, Who has subjected this creation for your benefit.
So where is your gratitude? Where is your recognition of His favor? The One Who gave you all of this deserves your thanks, your worship, and your devotion. He has opened the doors of provision and beauty for you from the sea alone — imagine how many more blessings He has placed in the land and the sky!
Let this verse awaken in your heart a profound sense of appreciation for your Lord. Every bite of fish you eat, every pearl you wear, every journey you take by sea — all of it is a gift from Him. And the greatest response to such generosity is not merely to say "thank you" with your tongue, but to live a life of obedience to Him, to worship Him alone, and to draw closer to Him through gratitude. For Allah has promised: *"If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]"* (Ibrahim 14:7).
So be among the grateful, and you will witness the doors of divine bounty open before you in ways you never imagined.
