Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- سُبْحَانَ رَبِّنَا (Subḥāna Rabbinā): Glory be to our Lord — declaring Him free from all imperfections, deficiencies, and from any failure to fulfill His promises.
- إِن كَانَ (In kāna): Indeed/Verily — used here for emphasis, not as a conditional.
- لَمَفْعُولًا (La-mafʿūlan): Surely to be done/fulfilled — an emphatic affirmation that it will certainly occur.
Tafsir (Explanation):
These are the words of those who were blessed with true knowledge and deep faith — the scholars and sincere believers among the People of the Book and others who, when the Qur’an is recited to them, fall down in prostration out of humility and awe before their Lord. In their prostration, they declare: "Glory be to our Lord!" — meaning, our Lord is far above any imperfection, and far above ever breaking His word or failing to fulfill what He has promised.
They affirm with absolute certainty: "Indeed, the promise of our Lord is surely to be fulfilled." This is a declaration of their unshakable conviction that whatever Allah has promised — whether it be the coming of the final Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him), the resurrection, the reward of Paradise for the righteous, or the punishment of Hell for the wicked — all of it is inevitable and will undoubtedly come to pass. There is no doubt, no delay, and no change in Allah’s promises, for He is the One who never fails in His word.
This verse teaches us a profound lesson: the believers’ response to the Qur’an is not one of arrogance or rejection, but of humility, submission, and heartfelt acknowledgment of the truth. They do not merely hear the words — they let them penetrate their hearts, leading them to prostrate before their Creator and to affirm His promises with complete certainty.
Dear reader, reflect on this beautiful attitude: these righteous souls combined action (prostration) with speech (declaration of Allah’s glory and truthfulness). Their faith was not just in their minds — it manifested in their bodies and on their tongues. This is the hallmark of true faith: when the heart is certain, the limbs obey, and the tongue bears witness.
Let us strive to be among those who, when they hear the verses of Allah, respond with humility, submission, and unwavering trust in His promises. For indeed, every promise Allah has made — whether in this life or the Hereafter — is as certain as the dawn following the night. So hold fast to His word, and let your heart find peace in the certainty that Allah never breaks His covenant.
