Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- إِلَّا رَحْمَةً – "Except as a mercy": meaning, it is only out of Allah's mercy that the Qur'an remains preserved with you and is not taken away.
- فَضْلُهُ – "His bounty/favor": referring to Allah's immense grace and generosity.
- كَانَ عَلَيْكَ كَبِيرًا – "Has always been great upon you": meaning His favor upon you, O Prophet, is tremendous and unparalleled.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse follows the preceding one, where Allah mentions that if He willed, He could take away the Qur'an entirely from the Prophet's heart and from the world. But then Allah says: *"Except as a mercy from your Lord"* — meaning, We did not take it away, but rather We preserved it for you, purely out of His mercy and compassion for you and for humanity. It was not because of any merit on your part, but because Allah willed to honor you and keep this divine revelation safe.
Allah then emphasizes: *"Indeed, His favor upon you has always been great."* This is a profound statement of honor directed at the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Allah's favors upon him are countless: He chose him as the final Messenger, sealed all prophethood with him, revealed to him the greatest and most comprehensive Book, granted him the station of praise (al-Maqām al-Maḥmūd) on the Day of Judgment, and made his nation the best of nations. No prophet before him was given such comprehensive and enduring gifts.
For us as believers, this verse carries a powerful reminder: the very existence of the Qur'an in our hands today is a living miracle of Allah's mercy. It has been preserved letter by letter for over 1,400 years, untouched by distortion or loss. This preservation is not a small matter — it is a sign of Allah's love for His final Messenger and for all those who follow him. When you open the Qur'an and recite it, you are touching a mercy that Allah chose to keep alive for you. Let this fill your heart with gratitude, and let it inspire you to honor this Book by reading it, understanding it, and living by it. For if Allah preserved it for you, how can you neglect it? And if His favor upon the Prophet was great, then following that Prophet is the path to receiving a share of that same divine mercy.
