Surah Maryam — Verse 33

Word Meanings:

• Al-Salam (السَّلَامُ): Safety, security, and well-being; also a greeting of peace.
• Yawma wulidtu (يَوْمَ وُلِدتُّ): The day I was born.
• Yawma amūtu (يَوْمَ أَمُوتُ): The day I die.
• Yawma ub‘athu ḥayyā (يَوْمَ أُبْعَثُ حَيًّا): The day I am raised alive (on the Day of Resurrection).

Explanation of the Verse:

In this blessed verse, Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) declares the comprehensive peace and safety that Allah granted him at the three most critical moments of every human existence—moments that are often filled with fear, uncertainty, and vulnerability.

First, he says: "And peace be upon me the day I was born" — meaning safety from the touch of Satan at birth. While every other child born of Adam is touched by Satan at the moment of birth (as narrated in authentic traditions), Jesus was protected by Allah’s grace, and the devil had no share in him. This was a sign of his purity and the special honor Allah bestowed upon him.

Second: "And the day I die" — meaning safety from the terror of death and protection from dying upon anything other than pure monotheism (Tawhid). Death is a moment of great fear for many, but Jesus was safeguarded from the whispers of Satan and from any deviation in faith at that critical juncture.

Third: "And the day I am raised alive" — meaning safety from the overwhelming horrors and terrors of the Day of Resurrection. On that Day, when all of humanity stands before their Lord in a state of utter fear and anxiety, Jesus will be among those granted security and tranquility.

This verse beautifully demonstrates that true peace is not found in worldly possessions or status, but in the protection and mercy of Allah at the moments that truly matter. It also serves as a powerful reminder for every believer: if we seek Allah’s pleasure and follow His guidance, He will grant us safety in this life, at the moment of death, and on the Day we are raised again.

A Da‘wah Reflection:

This verse invites us to reflect on the three great transitions of life—birth, death, and resurrection—and to ask ourselves: What will our state be at each of these moments? The peace that Jesus spoke of was not achieved through worldly means, but through complete submission to Allah. This is the essence of Islam: surrendering to the Creator, who alone holds the keys to safety in this world and the next. Let this verse inspire you to seek that same peace through faith, sincerity, and righteous action. For the one who lives in obedience to Allah will find that Allah’s peace accompanies them in the cradle, in the grave, and on the Day they stand before Him.
