Surah Maryam — Verse 34

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse stands as a decisive and definitive declaration: the one whose story has just been narrated — with his miraculous birth, his pure mother Maryam, and his honored rank as a prophet of Allah — is none other than `Eesa (Jesus), the son of Maryam. This is the absolute truth, the unshakable reality, and the correct account of his identity and nature.

Allah clarifies here that `Eesa is a servant of Allah, a messenger, and a human being created by Allah's command — not a god, not the son of God, and not a partner in divinity. The verse emphasizes that this is the "statement of truth" — the true word about him — in contrast to the false claims and distorted beliefs that people have invented.

The verse then points out that people differ and dispute concerning him: some doubt his miraculous birth, some deny his prophethood, some exaggerate his status and worship him, and others slander him. The Jews claimed he was an imposter or a sorcerer, while various Christian sects claimed he was God, the son of God, or a partner with God — all of which are false. The truth is what Allah has stated: he is `Eesa ibn Maryam, a noble prophet and messenger of Allah, born miraculously by Allah's power, but entirely human.

This verse invites us to anchor our hearts in the truth that Allah has revealed, rather than in the fluctuating opinions and speculations of people. How beautiful it is that Allah Himself has settled this matter for us with clarity and certainty! When we accept the Quran's guidance, we are freed from confusion and division. The story of `Eesa, peace be upon him, is a sign of Allah's infinite power — He creates whatever He wills, and when He decrees a matter, He only says "Be" and it is. So let us hold firmly to the truth revealed in the Quran, love all the prophets as honorable servants of Allah, and never fall into extremes — neither denying their message nor elevating them beyond their rank. This balanced, pure faith is the path of true success and the way to Allah's pleasure. May Allah guide us all to the straight path and keep our hearts firm upon the truth.
