Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Tur: The mountain known as Mount Sinai, located between Egypt and Madyan.
  • Al-Ayman: The right side — meaning the side that was to the right of Prophet Musa (Moses) as he approached.
  • Najiyyan: One who is in private, intimate conversation — i.e., one who is brought near to speak confidentially with another.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this noble verse, Allah (Exalted be He) tells us of the great honour He bestowed upon His Prophet Musa (peace be upon him). Allah called out to him from the right side of Mount Sinai — the side facing Musa as he travelled — and drew him near for a private, intimate conversation. This was not a mere call from a distance; rather, Allah brought Musa close and honoured him with direct speech, making him one who is spoken to privately and with great distinction.

This verse affirms the attribute of Speech (Kalam) for Allah — a perfect attribute that befits His Majesty and Glory, without any resemblance to the speech of His creation. It was a real, audible call that Musa heard directly from his Lord, a privilege that elevated his rank among the prophets.

The scene reflects Allah's immense mercy and love for His righteous servants. He chose Musa, drew him near, and spoke to him — a closeness that no human can fully comprehend but which fills the heart of every believer with longing for such divine intimacy. It teaches us that Allah draws near to those who sincerely seek Him, and that true honour lies not in worldly status but in being close to the Creator.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, ponder this moment: the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of all worlds, called a human being and spoke to him. This was not a distant revelation through angels alone, but a direct, personal address. If Allah honoured Musa with this closeness, then know that He also opens the door of intimate conversation with His servants through prayer (du'a), the recitation of His Book, and sincere remembrance (dhikr).

Let this verse inspire you to seek nearness to Allah in your own life. When you stand in prayer, when you raise your hands in supplication, when you read the Qur'an — know that Allah hears you, sees you, and loves for you to draw near to Him. The door of divine intimacy is never closed; it is only we who turn away. Come back to your Lord, and He will bring you near, just as He brought Musa near.
