Surah Maryam — Verse 54

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this noble verse, Allah addresses His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, commanding him to recite and mention the story of Prophet Ishmael (peace be upon him) in the Qur'an — a story that carries profound lessons for humanity. Ishmael was the son of Prophet Ibrahim and the forefather of the Arabs, and through his lineage came the final Prophet, Muhammad ﷺ.

Allah describes Ishmael with two magnificent qualities that define his noble character:

First: Truthfulness in Promise (Sidq al-Wa'd). Ishmael was a man of his word. Whenever he promised something, he fulfilled it completely. He never made a commitment — whether to Allah or to people — without honoring it. This quality is a cornerstone of faith and character. A believer's word is their bond, and Ishmael embodied this to perfection. His truthfulness was so renowned that Allah Himself testified to it in the Qur'an.

Second: He was a Messenger and a Prophet. Allah elevated Ishmael to the rank of prophethood and messengerhood. He was sent as a messenger to the tribe of Jurhum, who had settled in the valley of Makkah near his mother Hajar and the sacred house of Allah. As a prophet, he conveyed Allah's message with sincerity and wisdom, calling his people to worship Allah alone and to live righteously.

This verse teaches us that true nobility lies not in wealth or lineage alone, but in character and devotion to Allah. Ishmael's life was a living example of patience, obedience, and integrity. His story reminds us that fulfilling promises is a sign of true faith, and that Allah honors those who honor their commitments.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, reflect on the life of this great prophet. He was tested with trials — being left in a barren valley as a child, witnessing the command to sacrifice, and facing the challenges of building a community — yet he remained steadfast and truthful. His example invites us to examine our own lives: Are we people who keep our promises? Do we honor our words to Allah and to others?

Islam calls us to be people of integrity, whose words match their actions. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks his promise; and when he is entrusted, he betrays the trust." (Bukhari & Muslim). So let us strive to be like Ishmael — truthful in speech, faithful in promises, and sincere in our devotion to Allah.
