- Ya'mahun (يعمهون): To wander blindly, confused and perplexed, unable to see the truth due to being lost in misguidance.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah the Exalted reveals His response to the hypocrites who mocked the believers. When the hypocrites encountered the faithful and claimed to believe, then returned to their evil companions saying, "We were only mocking," Allah declares that the mockery returns upon them. This is a divine principle of recompense: those who mock the people of truth will find that their mockery rebounds upon themselves.
Allah's "mockery" of them is not like the mockery of created beings—far be it from Him to engage in frivolous jest. Rather, it is a just recompense of their own deed. In this worldly life, He treats them according to their outward profession of faith, allowing them to intermingle with Muslims, marry among them, and inherit from them, while their hearts remain full of hypocrisy. This apparent acceptance is itself a form of divine justice that will be fully realized in the Hereafter, where they will face the most humiliating punishment.
Furthermore, Allah grants them respite and prolongs their days, not as a sign of His pleasure, but as a means of increasing them in their transgression. They are left to wander in their blindness—confused, hesitant, and oscillating between doubt and disbelief. Every day they sink deeper into their misguidance, thinking they are deceiving the believers, while in truth, they only deceive themselves.
This verse carries a powerful lesson for every believer: never be distressed by the mockery of the disbelievers and hypocrites. Their ridicule is a temporary affair that will vanish like the morning mist, while the honor and victory belong to Allah and His righteous servants. The One who sees all and knows all is fully aware of every sneer and every sarcastic remark. He has promised to defend His believers and to turn the tables on those who seek to humiliate them.
A Call to Reflection:
O servant of Allah, let this verse strengthen your heart. When you hear the mockery of those who ridicule the religion, remember that Allah is the All-Hearing, All-Seeing. He does not neglect a single word spoken against His believers. The hypocrites and mockers may appear strong today, but their end is sealed in humiliation and loss. Meanwhile, your task is to remain steadfast, patient, and trusting in Allah's perfect justice. He will not leave you unanswered, and His recompense for the patient believers is far greater than any temporary worldly honor.
