Word Meanings:

  • Al-Laghw (اللَّغْو): Speech that slips from the tongue unintentionally, without deliberate intention or resolve. It refers to vain, careless, or inadvertent utterances.
  • Yu'ākhidhukum (يُؤَاخِذُكُمْ): He will hold you accountable, punish you, or take you to task.
  • Kasabat Qulūbukum (كَسَبَتْ قُلُوبُكُمْ): What your hearts have earned, meaning what you have genuinely intended, resolved upon, and deliberately committed to in your oaths.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse addresses a profound aspect of Islamic mercy and divine justice, teaching us about the nature of accountability for our oaths. Allah, the Most Merciful, declares that He will not hold you accountable for the oaths you utter carelessly or unintentionally — those words that flow from your tongue without a deliberate intention, such as when someone habitually says "No, by Allah" or "Yes, by Allah" in everyday conversation without meaning to swear an oath. Such inadvertent utterances carry no sin, no expiation, and no punishment, for Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it has truly intended.

However, Allah makes it clear that He will hold you accountable for what your hearts have genuinely earned and deliberately resolved upon. If you swear an oath with full intention and then break it, or if you swear falsely knowing the truth, then you are responsible before Allah for that commitment. The accountability is tied to the intention of the heart, not the mere movement of the tongue. This reflects the profound wisdom of Islamic law: actions are judged by intentions, and Allah's justice is perfectly precise — He neither neglects a sincere intention nor punishes a careless slip.

The verse concludes with two of Allah's most beautiful attributes: Al-Ghafūr (The All-Forgiving) and Al-Halīm (The Forbearing). Allah is Ever-Forgiving to those who turn to Him in repentance, wiping away their sins with His boundless mercy. And He is Forbearing, meaning He does not hasten to punish His servants despite their transgressions; rather, He gives them time, grants them respite, and opens the door of repentance so they may return to Him.

This verse carries a beautiful message of hope and encouragement for every believer. It teaches us that our Lord is not a harsh taskmaster looking for every opportunity to punish, but rather a Merciful and Forbearing God who understands human nature, forgives our unintentional mistakes, and only holds us accountable for what we truly mean and intend. This should fill your heart with love for Allah and motivate you to be mindful of your intentions, knowing that Allah sees the sincerity of your heart. It also invites you to rush to repentance whenever you fall short, for His forgiveness is vast and His mercy encompasses all things. Let this verse be a source of comfort — your Lord knows your struggles, pardons your slips, and rewards your sincere efforts beyond measure.

Your wives are a place of sowing of seed for you, so come to your place of cultivation however you wish and put forth [righteousness] for yourselves. And fear Allah and know that you will meet Him. And give good tidings to the believers.
And do not make [your oath by] Allah an excuse against being righteous and fearing Allah and making peace among people. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.

Allah does not impose blame upon you for what is unintentional in your oaths, but He imposes blame upon you for what your hearts have earned. And Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing.
For those who swear not to have sexual relations with their wives is a waiting time of four months, but if they return [to normal relations] - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
227وَإِنْ عَزَمُوا الطَّلَاقَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ
And if they decide on divorce - then indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
