Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Birr (الْبِرِّ): Righteousness, piety, and all acts of goodness and obedience to Allah.
  • Tansawna (تنسون): You forget, meaning you neglect and abandon.
  • Tatluna (تتلون): You recite, read, and study.
  • Afala Ta'qilun (أفلا تعقلون): Do you not use your intellect and reason?

Tafsir (Explanation):

How disgraceful and shameful is the condition of those who call others to righteousness while completely neglecting their own souls! The verse addresses the Jewish scholars of Medina who would advise their relatives and allies among the Muslims to remain firm upon the truth of Prophet Muhammad's message, acknowledging that his teachings were correct and his words were true — yet they themselves refused to embrace Islam and follow him.

Allah condemns this hypocrisy in the strongest terms: You command people to do good and believe in the truth, yet you forget yourselves and fail to act upon what you preach! And this is not out of ignorance — you are people who recite the Torah regularly, and in it you find the descriptions and signs of the final Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), along with the obligation to believe in him and follow him. You know the truth, yet you turn away from it.

The verse then delivers a powerful rhetorical question: "Do you not then use your intellect?" This is a profound call to reason — for how can a rational person guide others to a path while refusing to walk it themselves? How can one call people to salvation while remaining in destruction? The intellect, when used properly, would immediately recognize this contradiction and compel a person to practice what they preach.

This verse carries an eternal lesson for all believers: sincerity (ikhlas) requires that we apply the truth to ourselves before demanding it of others. The one who calls to Allah must be the first to embody the message. As the great scholars have noted, knowledge that is not acted upon becomes a proof against its bearer on the Day of Judgment. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "A man will be brought on the Day of Resurrection and thrown into the Fire, and his intestines will spill out, and he will circle around them as a donkey circles around a millstone. The people of the Fire will gather around him and say: 'O so-and-so! What is the matter with you? Did you not used to enjoin good and forbid evil?' He will say: 'I used to enjoin good but not do it myself, and forbid evil while doing it myself.'" (Bukhari & Muslim)

So let this verse be a mirror for every soul — a reminder that true faith is not merely knowledge or speech, but action and sincerity. The greatest preacher is the one whose deeds speak louder than words, and the most effective da'wah is the silent sermon of a righteous character. Let us be among those who practice what they preach, and who call others to Allah while being the first to submit — for that is the way of the prophets and the path of true success in this life and the Hereafter.

📜 Verse 42-46 — Al-Baqarah

And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].
And establish prayer and give zakah and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience].
Do you order righteousness of the people and forget yourselves while you recite the Scripture? Then will you not reason?
And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah]
Who are certain that they will meet their Lord and that they will return to Him.
